Tips for getting 2.5 yr old to drink

Any tips for getting my 2.5 year old to drink in this hot weather?

Just want her to take water or juice and water but won't (she used to). Won't even take ribena (only for very special occasions in our house). The only thing she drank in 2 days is a cup of coke - the thing is I don't want her drinking coke regularly. Have also tried all sorts of drinking vessels, tried to get her to choose too. When I ask her what she wants to drink the answer is 'nothing mummy'. Any ideas gratefully received.

what about if she drinks 'your drink' out of 'your glass'?
FWIW I used to fret about 5 year old DS when he was about your DD's age for exactly the same reason but he never seemed to come to any harm. Can you up her intake of watery fruit and veg? and ditch the coke if I were you, dont offer that as an option.

coke? Try water with a straw, all kids love straws

kitschnanny · 19/07/2006 21:39

or make some juice & water ice lollies??

How about making your own ice lollies? Or taking her to choose a special new cup?

TooTicky · 19/07/2006 21:40

Oh, me too!

coke only dehydrates you further, my dts (2.7) drink loads from baby bottles, normally only kept for bed, but I figured sod it, they can use them in the day in this weather if it makes them drink loads.

Thanks everyone. We already do straws and choosing our own cups. Dh and I drink water/juice exclusively in front of DD and she can share if she wants, but doesn't want to.

McKenzie - you're probably right that it's not a huge problem. The only thing is that even with 5+ fruit and veg a day she tends toward constipation so I like to keep her drinking.

ice cubes, my 2.5 year loves playing with them and eating them its a bit of a game.

Have you seen clpsio icles there ice pop but mineral water and flavouring but have no colours, additives or persertives.

i also have a plastice cup of water with ice cubes and strwas for myself and dd that it's my water so will drink it when she thinks i'm not looking.

Agree with the ice cubes. When we had a new fridge with automatic ice cudes, my DD had never drank so much.....

Also my DD loves to drink from different vessels. she goes through phases. Loves the sports drinks bottles, so buy her 1 bottle of water and just keep topping it up.

My DD is the same age (well 2.7) and I explained to her yesterday that she needed to drink more water when it is hot so that she doesn't get dehydrated... She learnt a new word (can say it) and when she went to the loo yesterday she even looked at her wee to make sure that it was as clear as possible so she knows she is drinking enough..

So when I asked her if she wanted a drink, she said no thanks and I reminded her that she needed to, to make sure no dehydration and she did....
You will be surprised how much they understand.

Good luck

We do ice-cubes too.

I hadn't thought of explaining to her about the colour of her urine! I tell her that she must drink because it's hot and if she doesn't drink she will be poorly. She takes a fairly keen interest about what she puts into the potty or toilet. I'll try explaining! Thanks!
