...and it is not just the children's obvious ones that appear to be bad for you, all bran is highest in salt and Nut clusters highest in fat........

I agree, SP. And I wonder what "the most salt" means, in the case of All Bran. I doubt it's that salty, and what salt there is, is probably outweighed by the other benefits.

Alternatively, your local health food store will have something like All Bran, but organic, and probably with less salt (worth checking, though).

Christie, we have mostly plain oats with dried fruit, nuts and seeds, and fresh fruit added as we feel like it. Cheap, healthy, nice.

Fauve · 19/07/2006 21:28

FAZ, how do you cook the brown rice to make cereal, please?

FrannyandZooey · 19/07/2006 21:30

Just cook it, Fauve. Like you normally would. Then the next morning, warm it through with a little milk, mashed banana, add spices or vanilla or whatever you like. It's like a sort of rice porridge.

I don't know exactly who decided that breakfast cereals should be cold, crunchy and puffy (was it Mr. Kellogg?) but I think they have pulled the wool over our eyes and taken our money for long enough now, don't you?

Fauve · 19/07/2006 21:32

That sounds lovely, thanks. I love brown rice.

milward · 19/07/2006 21:34

Seems I'm the only one who loves the sugary etc cereals

On the site I linked to earlier they have Kallo puffed brown rice which is good, Christie, or ds also likes Morning Puffs, or the rather amusingly named Quinoa Pops (they just sound like something out of the Modern Parent strip in Viz )

Oh, do you not know the history of breakfast cereal? It's all very weird, and I think it gets into Graham etc. I'm a bit vague on the details, but I'm pretty sure corn flakes are meant to prevent masturbation.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/07/2006 21:53

Ah, yes, Kellog was a big anti-wanker type bloke. Advocated circumcision, to prevent masturbation. (Does it work? What do you think!)cite .

NotQuiteCockney · 19/07/2006 21:55

Here is a more reputable link.

God American history is weird.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/07/2006 22:32

Hmm, well, that made everyone quiet down.

milward · 19/07/2006 23:10

Goodnes nqc! Never knew the history.

Wonder what's the background to muesli products?

NotQuiteCockney · 19/07/2006 23:11

I think muesli is European, and hence probably not so weird?

Ah, look . Perfectly innocuous, nothing to do with masturbation or foreskins or anything.

milward · 19/07/2006 23:18

Seems so nqc - good job it was only cornflakes that were targeted.

edam · 19/07/2006 23:23

Thing about All-bran is, it's a perfect example of a product with a healthy image that is, actually, not healthy. The salt content of all the cereals was compared per 100g and per serving. It's a fact that All-bran is flipping salty.

edam · 19/07/2006 23:25

What really gets me is that I earn my living doing this kind of thing (looking at whether stuff really is healthy) and yet dh will go out and come back with crappy sugar-fest children's cereal saying 'oh, I thought it was healthy, it had a picture of an apple on the front'. Grrr.

we tend to eat normal food at breakfast time in my house, as opposed to something that is branded as breakfast food. This morning DS had some chicken & rice left over from last night's supper & DD had a ham sandwich. Am I a weird freak or do other families do this too?

FrannyandZooey · 20/07/2006 11:19

Oh dear lisalisa, I feel somehow responsible as well [insane emoticon]

I have definitely found some brands nicer than others. I also found if you try to boil it in fruit juice as suggested on one of the packets, it never gets soft. I just add a little fruit juice at the end if you want a sweet version.

Am trying to think where I saw quinoa last week - oh yes in M + S, a ready made quinoa salad! It is definitely the grain du jour

Marina · 20/07/2006 11:27

Big in France as well F&Z. I saw some and thought of you...but didn't buy it
We have Weetabix, rice krispies and Special K on the go and Jordans porridge in winter.
Dcs are surprisingly amenable to this and usually eat one or the other, or Vogels toast, or yogurt and fruit.

FrannyandZooey · 20/07/2006 11:30

You see, quinoa and me are irrevocably entwined in people's minds

If someone tries it and doesn't like it, they will be going "Curse that woman"

Imagine if someone has a quinoa-related injury? Could I be sued?
