been reading some of the ideas for dinners threads and cheap meal ideas. dhal is my fave side dish and I am really keen to have a go making it but I am wondering what to have with it as always viewed it as a side. rice? flatbreads? or are you all whipping it up in your slow cooker and ordering a tandoori chicken to have with it?

We have it on it's own, or with a spoonful of raita, or with rice, or as the sauce on a thrifty biryani (spiced rice and veg).
I believe that traditionally you just have it with chapatis.

Rice or roti (chapattis). Or you could do yoghurt flatbreads

Basics naan breads are a thrifty option.

I sometimes put it with a load of fried mushrooms. Dunno about authenticity but yum

Sometimes we serve with rice but usually with an assortment of breads, naan, chapatti, roti, poppodoms and chutneys. Really do love it and do it in the slow cooker so when we get in it's just the most beautiful smell. One of those dinners we all serve ourselves at different times, just keep the slow cooker on low.

The dc like rice with it, but I prefer parathas (I buy them ready made in Waitrose) plus a coconut and chilli chutney thing, and a minty onion and cucumber salad.

It's one of our favourite meals.

Frozen parathas are the bomb if you have an Indian or Eastern (sic) shop near you... I love dal with parathas and a cucumber and tomato salad with some mint chopped in...

Yes to frozen parathas - so, so good.

I made flatbreads with flour, yougurt, water and some coriander seeds the other night, can't believe how easy and good they were.

here I made them gf as one of the people at dinner was gf but of course you can just sub in your normal flour. They'd be amazing with dahl and took literally 5 mins to make.

I normally serve with toasted pitta bread that is cut into soldiers and placed in the middle of the table, but looking at those flat breads they may be worth a try.

I often serve chickpea curry with dahl and rice along side a tomato, onion and cucumber salad.

I make on a friday night and we eat both friday and saturday - or saturday and sunday - leaving us free to do other things rather than cooking

I sometimes make chilli and garlic pittas - brush pittas with butter and sprinkle garlic and chilli over then bake until crispy.
