Funny Red Berries?

I got these weird red berries in my Abel and Cole box. I think they're redcurrants? Maybe? They look like gooseberries, only red. I think.

Yes, i could go check on the piece of paper, but it is too hot for me to move.

Can I just eat these berries, or do I have to do complicated things with them?

redcurrants are much smaller than gooseberries. are they really red or are they pinkish? in which case they might be a variety of gooseberry. easy way to find out if you need to do anything to them is to try them. if they're sweet and lovely then keep eating, if they're too sharp then stick them in a pan with a bit of sugar for a few minutes and make a pie/crumble/bread pudding/coulis

If they look like gooseberries, and are a similar size to gooseberries, then they're probably Worcesterberries - cross between a blackcurrant and a gooseberry.

You can do anything with them that you can do with goosegogs.

Although there are also some varieties of gooseberry which are red - the Worcesterberry is slightly smaller.

I have red gooseberries growing. they're dessert gooseberries, they make very good jams and pies etc.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/07/2006 17:04

Hmm, I think they're red gooseberries. I can't find the little piece of paper that would tell me. So I need to make crumble or similar with them?

They are very good for crumble/pie/jam. They're sweet and sharp - lovely flavour. The red dessert gooseberries are rarer and more of a delicacy than the fat green ones.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/07/2006 17:18

Could I bung them in a clafouti?

Or if not, what should I put them with in a crumble?

Some of mine are so dark they are almost black...I've made some fantastic jam with them

Greensleeves · 18/07/2006 17:19

If I was making a crumble with them I would put them with big chunks of Bramley apple and not too much sugar. With lashings of custard. Yum

cremolafoam · 18/07/2006 17:19

gooseberry fool of yum

Greensleeves · 18/07/2006 17:20

Had never occurred to me to put them in clafouti, but I think it would work beautifully. I'd put some rasberries in there for sweetness and ooze too though.
