I'm thinking vegetables and pototoes or other starchy foods. Basically wondering of I could cook a whole meal on a bbq. Any suggestions?

veggie kebabs and sweetcorn are lovely done on the bbq

not sure about potatoes

YellowFeathers · 18/07/2006 09:02

Of course
although you may need to par boil some bits.

One I like to do is New potatoes, par boil, put in a parcel of foil and drizzle with olive oil and spinkle rock salt, pepper and fresh rosemary on. Wrap it up and BBQ!

Also roasted veg, peppers, courgettes, onions, etc or do veg kebabs.

A naughty pudding idea
slice a banana down the middle in the skin and put in some of your favourite chocolate (I like to use dairy milk or galaxy), wrap in foil and let the chocolate melt
Yumm!

YellowFeathers · 18/07/2006 09:02

All these are ok if you have a big BBQ though.

Uwila · 18/07/2006 09:04

Wrap the potatoes in foil so they don't burn. Just like cooking a baked potatoe in the oven. Same for corn on the cob. I expect other veggies could be cooked the same way, though I've never done it. Carrots, courgettes, onions, etc.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 09:05

Thank you for the replies
oh of course - vgetable kebabs - how simple, how could I forget those!
I've also heard of the chocolate bananas but had completely forgotten about it, thanks for reminding me.
The potato thing sounds nice, will try it.
Would love to be able to cook something startchy without pre-cooking though, it would just be so simple to cook a whole mean on the bbq

Put mushroom, chopped up pepper, onion, courgette chuncks, cherry tomatoes on a stick & roast. I have a small charcol bbq & it works fine!

schnapps · 18/07/2006 09:06

...last line should obviously say meal reather than mean!

I tell you what else is nice,
there is a sauce called Maggi. Looks a bit like Soy sauce and tastes similar, comes in a glass bottle.
Drizzle that on to your veg, tastes fab!

YellowFeathers · 18/07/2006 09:09

Oh and do the JO thing with fish. Wrap it in newspaper, cover with rock salt pepper and oil and any other bits you like, tie with string and cook. Gives the fish a lovely smoked flavour.

MrsBadger · 18/07/2006 09:14

we often cook whole meals on the bbq, but I must say, if we're having bbq meat/fish we tend to have it with bread and salad, so no other actual cooking required. Sometimes do veggie kebabs though.
Naan or similar flat breads are great warmed on the bbq - we used to get huge ones spiked with kalonji from the Indian grocers, brush with oil and bbq till hot and crusty outside and all soft and steamy inside. Or heat pittas till they puff, then split and fill

Mercy · 18/07/2006 09:35

Halloumi cheese

Mushrooms - get the large open ones, dot with butter & garlic, wrap in foil and put on coals at the end

Like Mrs Badger, we just have bread and salad with whatever we're eating

Carmenere · 18/07/2006 10:00

Yellow Feathers did you know that the main ingredient in that sauce is Monosodiumglutmate? Use with caution!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 18/07/2006 10:04

make 'hockey pucks' cut potatoes (regular or sweet) into rounds about an inch think. par boil them til they are almost done but not quite.
Brush with oil, season and put them on the grill.
Dee-lish!

Tommy · 18/07/2006 10:07

a frein of mine does fruit on the BBQ - cut up fruit lie [eache, pineaplles, strawberries etc and wrap in silver foil with a bit of sugar and put on BBQ while you're eating main course and eat with cream or ice cream, - yummy.
I've seen special silver foil bags in Sainsbury's to do this with. You could also do veggies in them I guess

Kelly1978 · 18/07/2006 10:23

paneer (indian cheese) - skewer chunks with veg and marinate, or make paneer burgers.
mogo (cassava chips) - parboil, bbq then serve with salt and chiili powder
sweet potatoes - chop them, parboil for ten mins, then cover in olive oil, salt and tabasco, then bbq the chips.
stuff mushooms with a mixture of chilli, soft cheese, garlic, etc.

appples - another dessert idea, whizz some walnuts, glace cherries, brown sugar, ginger, almonds, butter and amaretto in a blender, then spoon the mixture into the core of cookign apples, wrap in foil then bbq til soft.

garlic bread, jsut make it, then wrap in foil and bbq.

crispy pot skins - bake potatoes, cut in half, scoop out the middle. Fill the skind with spring onions, cheese, or wahatever you fancy and bbq.

aubergine is nice bbqed too, slice it and then melt cheese over it.

Kelly1978 · 18/07/2006 10:26

I do compelte meals, and cook some in advance for the next day too. We'll have burgers or whatever, then those sweet pots are really nice served up with jerk chicken and pineapple, and I juSt microwave it all the day after!
