If you have cooked something from any of the following, what would you recommend and why? Must be vegetarian and not involve tomatoes.

HFW Veg book - am not at all impressed with this one so far
Madhur J - World Vegetarian
Most of Nigella's
World Food Cafe one and two

Looking to expand our options, as we seem to eat the same things all the time.

Nigella's lemon linguine from How to Eat (still her best book, IMHO) is brilliant...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/12/2013 20:09

Brilliant. Thank you.

I like the mushroom ragout from HFW. Never tried it with polenta, as per the recipe, but it's great with pasta.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2013 20:01

Thanks. I can't stand polenta, so would certainly avoid that! DDs won't eat mushrooms, so one to try when they are out!

HFW veg book - Things I've made and have made again lots of times:
North African squash and chickpea stew (actually that might have some tomato in)
squash and fennel lasagne
spanokopitta
tahini dressed courgette and green bean salad
roasted parsnips, puy lentils and watercress salad
lots of the soups
couscous salads
frittata with summer veg
oven roasted fritatta
lots of the variations of puy lentil salad
white beans with artichokes
pasta with fennel, rocket and lemon.

World vegetarian - I have it, but haven't tried anything from it. Nothing looks appealing, I haven't heard of half the ingredients and wouldn't know where to buy them. I'd be interested to know what other have made and enjoyed.

Nigella - veggie recipes very low down on the priority list and seem very much a poor afterthought IMO. Notable exception is her veggie chilli in Feast, but this does have tinned tomatoes in.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2013 20:17

I've made Nigella's veggie chilli a fair bit (just use passata, which I'm okay with) but tbh my own uber-chilli recipe is nicer imho!

I do fancy the parsnip and lentil salad, so will deffo try that.

I've used WV a fair bit - I especially like the puy lentil salad-type thing and dp likes the Trinidadian split pea thing.

I think the prob with HFW is that I don't really feel that I need a recipe to do stuff like salad, cheese on toast etc.

Forgot to say thank you. Sorry.

I like the macaroni peas from the hfw Veg book.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2013 20:28

Thanks. Am struggling to get my head around that tbh - it looks like bland green mush.

It's got enough garlic and cheese to taste like something. It does look a bit funny though. DH said it looked like something you feed little kids.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2013 20:38

Yes - I agree! :)

Nigella How to cook - tahini sauce for lamb.
been making it for years.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/12/2013 20:40

Thanks, but am veggie. :)

The tahini sauce is also perfect with fried aubergines and courgette fritters.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/12/2013 20:20

Thank you. :)
