Frozen mash - worth the bother?

After peeling spuds to make mash tonight (to go with goulash) I have decided I prefer the idea of rice with it instead. Google seems a bit conflicting (lots of variations) so, has anyone frozen their own left over mash and was it nice reheated? We don't have a microwave so when I reheat it would have to be on the hob.
Thanks in advance!

Mash freezes brilliantly, I reheat itin the oven though, never tried it on the hob!

I have done and it's fine but I do reheat in the microwave. Tried it once from frozen in a pan and found it was sticking to the pan and catching before it thawed. Would be fine if you took it out in the morning though.

I've frozen a shepherds pie and the mash was totally fine, be handy for one day when you are stuck.

HaroldTheGoat · 05/12/2013 19:27

Mine would have been in the oven.

yes I do whenever we have any left. I just microwave and add some butter, I imagine it would work on the hob though.
Also, I was amazed at how good the frozen tesco mash was, for emergencies. I thought it would be awful but it was actually really good.

Or cool it and make potato croquettes, then cook them from frozen

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/12/2013 19:29

I would be tempted to cook the potatoes and freeze them whole, then defrost and reheat them before mashing. When I tried freezing mash, it turned out very watery.

Gosh, lots of replies!

Right, I just make it as normal then put it in a zip lock bag? Some recipies say not to add milk etcetera but am presuming that doesn't have to be the case? Didn't think to reheat in the oven - is that from frozen?

I often freeze my own leftover mash to use another day.It is exactly like the original and if I dont mention that it was frozen n o-one ever knows.

But I have no idea who to rehaet mash.Obviously it will have to be defrosted and reheated slowly but more than that I cannot say.

HaroldTheGoat · 05/12/2013 19:33

I would probably let it defrost and out it in covered with dots of butter on the top to stop it drying out.

Mine was just wrapped up in cling film...

balia · 05/12/2013 19:36

I've made it when I've had a lot of potatoes that need eating - I mash as normal then use an icecream scoop - that way you can take as much or as little as you need out of the freezer and defrost/oven cook from frozen without having to do the whole lot. Plus a big lump takes much longer to defrost/cook in oven. It's better if it is fairly stiff so I wouldn't add milk but butter is fine.

lolalotta · 05/12/2013 19:44

I hear in the oven once thawed.

lolalotta · 05/12/2013 19:44

*heat

I think the flavour is altered. The dcs refuse to eat it and I can taste why but it would work as a ingredient for another recipe, fish cakes for example, we use ours to make potato bread for breakfast.

Frontdoorstep · 06/12/2013 19:02

Have to say that no matter how I make it or freeze or defrost or heat it up, it never tastes as good as freshly made. So I wouldn't freeze, I think the same about bought mash, I wouldn't freeze either.
