You know the huge paper sacks of potatoes?

Do you buy them?
Do they keep ok, and where do you store them?

I'm quite tempted but don't want to discover half a bag of manky spuds in a couple of weeks. Confused

I buy them but am terrible for not using them so I have started making bulk batches of mash and freezing it if I find they are starting to sprout

GeeinItLaldy · 04/12/2013 14:55

We don't buy them as we're given them by FiL who grows spuds. Keep them in the paper sack in a cool, dark place and they'll keep for several months. If they start to sprout, just remove the stalks. Only discard if they're green but keeping them in the dark should prevent them from turning green.

We store them under the stairs usually. A garage or outhouse is ideal for storage and you can chuck an old blanket or cover over the bag to make sure they're totally in the dark if light is an issue.

Fuck. I'm turning into almost as much of a potato bore as my FiL Hmm

Freshly dug ones seem to keep longer but but buying olders ones will strout quicker. I keep them in the dark and cold, also check over that none rot because when one goes they all go.

Suddengeekgirl · 04/12/2013 14:57

So the garage would be a good place? :)
Don't really want it have room for a sack of spuds in the house other than dh

Don't they go soft? I buy a small bag from the supermarket and they're soft within a week

4merlyknownasSHD · 04/12/2013 15:02

The garage is fine, but don't let them freeze. Warm is bad (they will go soft), cold is good, frozen is dreadful.

dingit · 04/12/2013 15:04

I bough one of those potato keeper bags from poundland. Best thing ever, it really works!

dingit · 04/12/2013 15:04
  • bought
ProfYaffle · 04/12/2013 15:05

They're find. It helps if they're covered in mud, kept in the paper sack and kept in the dark. We always do this over the winter, much cheaper than the titchy supermarket bags.

ProfYaffle · 04/12/2013 15:06

fine not find.

MistyB · 04/12/2013 15:09

The ones from the supermarket have been cold stored, transported and then kept in the warm supermarket in plastic which is why the go soft quickly. If you buy a sack directly from a producer they have not been cooled down and warmed up so should last much much longer plus the paper keeps them better than plastic.

We buy a big sack from the farm shop for £5. We keep them in the garage and they stay great

Redpriestandmozart · 04/12/2013 17:10

We don't mind if we loose a few as it still works out a huge saving on supermarket prices..

AnnabelleLee · 05/12/2013 19:30

what do you mean by massive? We buy 10kilo as a standard.

4merlyknownasSHD · 05/12/2013 20:16

Standard sack of potatoes weighs half hundred weight (56lbs or 25kgs)

Mintyy · 05/12/2013 20:18

Oooo, just thinking - have never even thought of this before - would they keep alright in my cellar? It is dry. And completely dark.

cheesypastaplease · 05/12/2013 20:22

I buy them. It lasts for ages and I usually give some to im laws.

NoComet · 05/12/2013 20:22

DM used to buy them at the farm gate. One of our jobs was going and getting potatoes from the garage.

I think they lived on a rubber tile to stop the bottom ones freezing.

AnnoyingOrange · 05/12/2013 20:27

We always had sacks of potatoes when I was a child. They were kept outside in the shed and lasted for ages

Twit · 05/12/2013 20:27

We get big sack frm farm shop, keep it in old wooden laundry box (so vented) and in a cool spot, we get though it in about a month.

bishbashboosh · 05/12/2013 20:38

Yes I do! I get the 25 kg sacks from a farm for 6 pounds they're fantastic and huge, wonderful for baking.

I keep them in the sack and the mud helps them keep for longer, keep them in the porch then as I'm getting to the end if them I transfer to the fridge

They are soooooo nice
