Confused by giant cake! Help!

My DS is baking a Xmas cake this year. He's currently (currantly?) soaking the fruit.

It's the Mary Berry recipe. Thing is it says "bake in a 23cm/9in deep tin".

Not to sound thick but does this mean a deep tin which is 9in across, or 9in deep??

Because 9in deep is pretty huge isn't it? But then I've got a tin 9in across but there's no way the mixture will fit in it - the fruit alone wouldn't fit in it!

We're going to need a bigger boat tin aren't we?

Anyone?

It means 9" in diameter, but a deep tin. I guess you will need something about 5"-6" deep if there's a lot of fruit.

Good luck!

Thank you!

A standard cake pan/tin is usually about 3" deep if it is 9" across. You are unlikely to need to go any higher. The way to be absolutely sure it doesn't over flow is to line the pan with a double layer of baking parchment that is 5 or 6" high. In fact Christmas cakes don't usually rise very much anyway. I would guess, from your original post, that you have what is known as a Sandwich Pan.

No it's about 3in deep but honestly I can't see the mixture all fitting in!!

A deep tin does mean a 3" tin. It should fit.

Mmmmmm giant cake

Well DS is about to start mixing so I'll soon find out if it fits!

I've double lined the tin and it comes well above the top so fingers crossed!
