New look food and recipes section - win free fruit & veg for a year!

We know how much you lot love your food: over the years you have posted nigh-on 3000 recipes to the site, covering everything from baby food to lemon drizzle cake, and all the roast dinners, picnic foods and puddings in between. In honour of your input, we've been thinking for some time now that our food section was ripe for a bit of a do-over - so we've spent the last few months doing just that: garnishing each recipe with a mouth-watering photo, beefing up the search engine, and whipping together some of our very favourite recipes into handy collections for you to drool over browse.

The idea was to make it easier for you to find the recipes you're after, and simpler to add your own. There's also a lot of useful info in there (from what to do when your child announces they've become a vegetarian to ideas for using up leftovers, packed lunch dos and don'ts and how to cater a children's party) which wasn't too easy to track down in days gone by; it's now gathered in one place, ready for when you need it.

And we're not stopping there: still to come is a new mealplanner tool and a dish-of-the-day recommendation. The recipe folders will be back better than ever, and there's even a Mumsnet cookbook in the pipeline (thanks again to all of you who helped with recipe testing!). Rather than waiting for everything to be ready, though, we wanted to give you a look at what's there now, and ask for your thoughts. Do you like the new look? Is the search working for you? And is there anything crucial that's missing?

Of course, all the shiny new features are as nothing without your recipes; your works-every-time cake, your pleases-any-fussy-child dish or your looks-like-I've-made-a-huge-effort-when-it-only-took-minutes dinner party staple. So we're marking the relaunch with a new competition: share your recipes with other Mumsnetters over the next month by adding them here and you'll be entered into a competition to win a year's weekly delivery of fruit and veg boxes from Riverford. Good luck, and do let us know what you think of the revamp!

I have added a naice ham sandwich meaningful recipe.
Do I have put a link to it somewhere ?

CatherineHMumsnet · 28/11/2013 09:30

AryaofhouseQuark - no we'll pick a recipe uploaded over the course of the competition duration at random, so all recipes will be automatically included in the competition.

Thanks Catherine Smile

SarahMumsnet · 28/11/2013 09:54

Hey everyone,

thanks loads for the feedback, and apols for teething troubles

CatherineHMumsnet · 28/11/2013 11:47

Hi - search should now be fixed although it does appear that there's a glitch when looking for recipes marked egg-free. We're working on that now - but carb-free should be OK now.
Do keep telling us if you spot mistakes.

i went and looked at recipes and then added a recipe from there rather than the link on this thread - will i still enter the draw?

I've just added a recipe & I echo the posters complaint about the format for uploading, ie 1 ingredient at a time - TBH as is, it is a first class PITA & would put me off doing it again :(

Also I noticed there no section to tick for either budget recipes or one to use up past it's best food stuff - my recipe uses up old bananas, a section covering something like that might be useful ??

missorinoco · 28/11/2013 20:50

I like the look of it, but I've just been got by a biscuit. I followed the MN talk link to the new recipe section, clicked on Slow cookers #101 and was zapped.

Do I have to pay ransom?

missorinoco · 28/11/2013 21:13

And some of the slow cooker recipe ingredients are hidden under the pictures. Chicken supreme is currently chicken surprise, as the method is top bung all the ingredients into the slow cooker, and the ingredients are a mystery.

Also no category for dinner/tea in the food type. As in main meal could be a quick tea or a full on dinner.

I sound like a whinger. I do like the new recipe site. Don't mind the "add ingredient" function. There are lots of preset items.

LackaDAISYcal · 29/11/2013 00:08

Not had a proper look round yet, but can I suggest in your "collections" section there are gluten free, dairy free, nut free sections, or even just a general "free from" section.

Will comment more later, but the obvious thing hitting me is that there is some text hiding behind the star rating box to the right of the photographs, and this text encroaches sometimes on the "what's hot" box.

Using firefox.

LackaDAISYcal · 29/11/2013 00:09

and what on earth could someone have said to have been deleted on a recipe thread Shock

Rockinhippy · 29/11/2013 00:26

It was a spam post LackaDaisy :)

MadameDefarge · 29/11/2013 03:13

If MNHQ would like me to proof the recipes then I would be happy to. I know from my work in publishing how had this is when you have worked on stuff just to see things (never proof your own work) and also as a professional cook I can see where stuff is just going a bit wonky.

No veg needed! Would like to pay MN back for all the lurrve and shit over the years.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 29/11/2013 06:16

The toasted granola recipe has the information section (prep time, author etc in a grey box) covering the ingredients. This one.

Suddengeekgirl · 29/11/2013 07:24

When adding a recipe does it hate one all your own work or can you share a favourite recipe from someone else (a proper cook book I mean)
Don't want to be plagiarising or copyright breaking anything! Confused

3rdnparty · 29/11/2013 08:18

Is there a button to go back to the old plain list layout... all those pictures just make it harder to find stuff/categories,... I can read, I do not need/want to follow picture links - this is much too busy - is it designed for small children to navigate? it looks like cbeebies....Sad

3rdnparty · 29/11/2013 08:19

where is the slow cooker section? "my eyes, my eyes" as they say in Property/DIY Grin

Margene · 29/11/2013 16:25

If you click on "Best basic recipes", you get the biscuit/page not found screen.

And why have you used stock images for the recipes? I want to see what the actual recipe turns out like, not a generic photo.

I know it's been revamped, but it still comes across like something of an afterthought, and I'm afraid doesn't really offer more than all the other recipe sections on sites like this.

BornToFolk · 30/11/2013 20:20

Can you edit recipes once added? I've managed to mark mine "egg free" when, in actual fact, it's got an egg in...Blush

I would love that too, noticed a typo in mine & having re read it, realised I could have simplified it. So an edit function would be great :)

NumptyNameChange · 01/12/2013 16:07

have mnhq run off in despair??

Suddengeekgirl · 02/12/2013 14:15

They've forgotten us! :(

nextphase · 02/12/2013 18:51

OK, just entered a recipe.
Agree with the ingredients line by line isn't great.
Has it also juggled them before publishing? I now can't find my recipe to check!
