Pregnant again after 7 years - what can't I eat?

I think things have changed a bit since last time. I know to be aware of raw egg, shellfish and blue cheese, but someone mentioned pineapple or grapefruit the other day. Does anyone know if I can eat those?

I think pineapple & grapefruit are fine - never heard that they weren't! Pineapple is meant to be eaten if you want to bring on labour thgouh, it's one of those things along with currys and, oh, what was that other thing... begins with an S...

I think you're meant to limit certain fish because of mercury levels, wash vegetables thoroughly and be careful with chilled ready meals. Avoid lots of liver (too much Vit A)

somebody put a great link to the govt website on a thread the other week when we were all winging that you basicall y couldn't eat anything - have to log off shortly but will try to find it for you - the thread that is - cannot do links

Yes you can. Avoid blue or soft cheeses made with unpasteurised milk and uncooked or badly reheated seafood. The latest advice is that soft or blue cheese made with pasteurised milk or hard cheese made with unpasteurised milk is fine. Raw meat is not advisable, neither are cold deli meats and sausages but the risk is always very small. Raw eggs are a no-no - eg in fresh mayonnaise (not stuff in jars). You can safely eat anything at all that is heated to piping hot except don't eat lots of liver or liver pate because the vitamin A levels are quite high and there is a link between (extremely) high vit A levels and birth defects. More than a couple of tins of tuna a week is off limits due to mercury, ditto for swordfish. There is a food scientist who posts on Mumsnet who says she eats everything just the same. You may not want to take the same - albeit small- risk. The restrictions aren't really very onerous IMO.
