Recipes that don't require an oven

Our oven died this weekend. RIP CRAPPY OVEN WE INHERITED FROM PREVIOUS OWNERS Luckily, DH recently took out appliance insurance but it doesn't come into fruition until January 1st. So, we're going to hold out until January before replacing it.

I have a microwave, a gas hob, a slow cooker, a panini press and a gas bbq available to cook on so I was just looking for some recipe inspiration to keep us going. Particularly, any ideas on how to do a Christmas dinner without the much needed oven. Also, any post school snacks that you can recommend that don't need baking.

Thanks!!

I found this oven free Xmas dinner on a forum

DH wants to get a turkey fryer 50 quid on eBay. Apparently Turkey done this way is great. I always suspected that the best rosaries I've ever had we're parboiled, then deep fried...

Steamed pudding on the stovetop.

Do you have a grill?

Also, I melt cheese in the microwave for cheese toasties. Microwave is great for a jacket potatoes.

How snazzy is your microwave?

TheZeeTeam · 25/11/2013 00:30

Microwave is built in but pretty basic. I'd forgotten about the grill! I presumed it wasn't working because the oven part isn't, but it does work! So, at least I can do grilled potatoes instead of roasties.

All you need in life is a microwave, hob and grill!

Braise / slow cook your meat
Parboil potatoes then fry
Microwave then grill stuffing (you might want to double check if threats possible) Grin
Veg on hob
Anything with a crusty top, finish under the grill
Puddings steamed on hob, and I make steamed sponges in the microwave.

It is doable.

BBQ your turkey - I had some friend's that used to swear by it. Just look up how to do the specifics first for timings etc.

I always do my veg in the microwave - less washing up and most importantly they taste better, less watery.

Xmas pud does really well in the microwave.

Xmas log - I always have a chocolate brandy fridge cake as my Xmas log - it has been my favourite ever since I can remember and even though I'm now in my 40s, my mum still makes it for me every year Grin. (particularly good as an indulgent kick start breakfast after Christmas, especially served with oranges in brandy! (obviously not if you need to drive!)

Can you use it as an opportunity to work through your freezer and defrost all the portions of things you freeze over the year and then forget to eat ? Or is that just me?

LOL Zipzap. No, not just you. Unfortunately, we just did that! I defrosted the oven so we ate everything before I did it!
