Are pomegranites really nice or are they just the latest poncy trend?

I remember my mum buying them for a treat and thinking they weren't all that nice.

Today I bought some for my son for a treat and he didn't think much of them either.

They seem to be the height of fashion in TV and magazine cookery but why? Am I missing something? Is there some way of using/preparing them that transforms them into something yummy?

my mum used to buy them for me too .. when they were ripe they were delicious .. but they did seem to take a lot of effort to eat

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 17:34

the juice is delicious but expensive

they are the new 'super' food (I think - like blueberries used to be)

there's prob an article in the daily mail about their health benefits!

trinityrhino · 12/07/2006 17:35

took alot of effort to eat but they were nice

SoupDragon · 12/07/2006 17:35

I like them but that are a complete faff. So I don't buy them.

Blandmum · 12/07/2006 17:37

I also like them but find them too much of a faff.

Ate them as a child so they can't be 'new and poncy'

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 17:37

the health benefits are here in the 3 articles in the DM under News and Health

I love them but like you lot, I remember my mum buying them as a treat for us.

I adore them - but not this time of year - wait til autumn, when they are 'in season' much nicer.
If you find them a faff, cut into quarters and break the seeds into a bowl and scoff like that. You can eat the inner seedy things btw so don't see they're faffy at all. Just delicious

Pomegranite molasses is all the rage here now too! And the juice is selling like crazy for the health benefits too.

anorak · 12/07/2006 17:51

I know they're not new but they seem to be the in thing at the moment IYKWIM.

I think maybe the ones I got today aren't ripe enough then. The seeds were quite hard and crunchy in the middle. Will the others ripen more if I leave them in the sun?

we used to have them as children and eat all the seeds out of them using a pin... As Twiglett says - it did take rather a lot of effort!
Perhaps I should try them again
