Hello everyone,

DS was never a problem, he ate absolutely everything and in large quantities... but DD (6 mo) is more discerning
She isn't keen on what I have given to her up to now which is quinoa and millet flakes with warm goat milk (before I hear a whole lot of YUUUK - would you eat that yourself, DS used to love it )
Anyway... she needs to have breakfast as she is getting very hungry mid-morning so I am looking for ideas. I need to add that I only give organic and I loath sugar ! Sorry to be so picky but any idea welcome - thanks !

Pamina, could you explain something to me that has very little to do with this thread. I'm in Sweden now and I don't always follow current English sayings: is Irish porridge like Scottish with lots of salt or is Irish porridge lots of porridge made with water? Or is it some sort of organic oat brand?

Really trivial but I am confused.

Thanks

sorry if i'm repeating anyone here but where can i find weetabix, organis without salt?

Ta very much!

bea · 21/02/2002 08:23

whoops! meant organic... but also another query... am i still supposed to be watching out for salt in food now dd is almost 8 moths old? (already in there salt... not me adding it!)

Pamina and Pupuce, I've only just got a microwave and had no idea there were safety queries about them (apart from burning your mouth on hot food, which I guess is not what you mean!). I'd be really grateful if you could briefly say what the problem is.

I do use my microwave for more than just re-heating! I've got a fantastic book called "Microwave Gourmet" by Barbara Kafka (I think) which is down to earth and realistic about what a microwave is good for and what it's not.

My favourite is a recipe for risotto which make a great and easy supper for dh and me (and now ds) - especially with the addition of loads of freshly chopped herbs. Apparently the microwave is good at making the starch swell (good for risotto, bad for other types of rice). It's not any quicker than doing it on the stove, but you don't have to stand over it stirring and still finishes up beautifully creamy and yummy.

Back to the subject of babies' breakfasts, ds was never keen on cereal. He likes yoghurt and fruit - but that's what he gets for his "pudding" at the child minder. We now give him a croissant (cosmopolitan kid!), which he enjoys and which he can eat himself - and which gives us time to have our own breakfast!

It's maybe something you can think of when your daughter is a wee bit older, Pupuce.

and Nigella has a fab recipe for a microwave chocolate pudding which is divine...

Zoya - I am not keen on debating the microwave issue because I am NO expert and I can see the abuse coming from some mums who might fear that I am scaremongering .... I have taken my stand by reading different things, it's my personal choice and I have no wish to influence anyone else but if you are looking to find out what sort of dangers I am refrring to....
The main reason I am not in favour of microwaave food is that recent research shows that microwave oven-cooked food suffers severe molecular damage. When eaten, it causes abnormal changes in human blood and immune systems.
Also as you probably know microwaves are not recommended for heating a baby?s bottle. The bottle may seem cool to the touch, but the liquid inside may become extremely hot and could burn the baby?s mouth and throat... Heating the bottle in a microwave can cause slight changes in the milk.
In infant formulas, there may be a loss of some vitamins. In expressed breast milk, some protective properties may be destroyed...

Thanks Pupuce that's very helpful. I was just curious, and will follow those links. Didn't mean to stir - I certainly don't want this thread to become an MMR-style slanging match!

Pamina - Hooray, you're back! Where have you been, you little minx? I was starting to get worried and was just about to put a message out on the 'Missing persons' thread.
