Any suggestions for an easy French-themed dessert?

I've got to cook a French-themed dessert next week for three foodie types (the others are providing starter, main and drinks) but I have no idea what to cook! Does anyone have any ideas? It has to be easy for someone who is not very good at cooking (ie, me) but also won't horrify the diners. I've looked online but things like cremr brûlée look really hard and I haven't really seen anything that looks quite straightforward.

Any ideas?! Any suggestions gratefully received.

What about crepes? With fruit and a caramel or chocolate sauce.
Or a chocolate or lemon tart, but buy a ready made pastry case then you just have to make the filling.

Mary berrys tart au citron, you can make it even easier by buying a pre made pastry case.

The French I know have cheese for dessert :)

Madeleines are easy, but you need a mould tray for them.
Crepe suzette?
Clafouti?

Tarte tatin is easy- it's a caramelized upside-down apple tart. You can buy the puff pastry ready made, then you just need a little flour, butter, sugar and apples.

Serve with cream or ice cream.

Wine poached pear (poire au vin)

Is super easy and nice on a cold night, especially followed by cheese.

I was just about to say Tarte Tatin, or a Normandy open apple tart! even easier if you get pre rolled pastry

I third tarte tatin. Serve with clotTed cream. Made it for a foodie AT the weekend and he was delighted. Simple and delicious. Use cox apples and smear the butter over your pan before you sprinkle on the sugar. I use an small enamel casserole pan as you need something that can go on hob and in oven and proper tatin pans are expensive. Pm me if you want the recipe I use. ENjoy your meal! SOunds lovely.

Creme brûlée doesn't have to be hard. this recipe looks fairly straightforward.

I came on to say tarte tatin too!

We had a French night in July and did a bit of research for authentic recipes but simple came up with Creme Carmel and chocolate mousse. We were catering for 2 vegans included in the evening so these were made vegan.

Any suggestions for an easy French-themed dessert?

Oh thank you everyone! My phone went weird so I didn't think the post had worked and now loads of replies.

Had thought about crepes but will have to make the pud at home then transport by car to host 's house so thought that might be tricky. I think tarte tatin might be a good bet, especially if it can involve pre-made pastry. Doesn't sound too hard...Smile

Thanks again!

The French don't really eat french fancies though. :)

Tart Tatin, creme brulée and creme caramel are easy, so is chocolate mousse if you have a mixer.

Most french buy a tart or an entremet (like a mousse cake) from the pâtissière. So if you want to be really authentic then buy it.

dilidali is right in that you have cheese after your main course, but then you have dessert.

Lemon tart - doesn't need reheating and travels well.
