vomiting - allergic to cow's milk?

my 7m old ds has recently taken to periodic violent vomiting (not projectile). it started about a month ago, and the only pattern i noticed was that it happened after i had used cow's milk to mix his morning/evening cereal (ok after 6m i thought). we went back to using formula for this and he has been fine. encouraged by this, i made cauliflower cheese and he has been eating it with no ill effects. however, this evening i gave him quite a large helping of yoghurt (greek - might be relevant?) for the first time. he seemed to enjoy it, but was copiously sick about an hour later. i am wondering if he could be allergic to cow's milk or could it be that he is just not ready for "uncooked" dairy products? he doesn't have diarrhoea or any other symptoms.

any help or advice appreciated. thanks very much in advance.

PS - we had him checked out by a paediatrician after the first episode - couldn't find anything wrong.

DD (6 months old) also vomited last night and also 4 days ago... I assumed it might have been due to over feeding. It isn't in my case due to cow's milk as she isn't having any.
The first time it happened was after she had rice (not baby rice - DH thinks I should not have given it to her but I thought DS had rice at that age) and last night she had lentils and then a banana. All she drinks is breast milk...
So I am also clueless but this morning I feel sicky as well so maybe this time it's a virus ?
Bossykate, do you think you might be overfeeding ?
After all our babies are small... I am also a bit at a loss....

we have gradually reintroduced dairy products including fresh milk and he now seems to be fine - no vomiting.

pupuce - yes i suppose it could have been overfeeding. he is a clb, developing well and generally happy and healthy, but for some reason has never done well on his centile charts, so i'm always anxious to get him to have that little bit extra...

i find he sometimes suffers from OAMS - over anxious mother syndrome!

bossykate, interested to read this old thread as my 8 month old also now does this - periodic violent vomiting - it comes out in a massive stream until she has emptied her stomach. She is often sick after yogurt or her formula bottle.

I thought I might try goats milk formula - does anyone know whether it might help? I suppose it could be overfeeding but I dont think she had much supper - four heaped tablespoons (approx) mushed up roast chicken/carrots/brocoli/potato then her bottle (6oz). She went to bed fine and then woke up half an hour later really crying, I picked her up and she vomited all over me until she had nothing left in her tummy. The vomiting has happened roughly once a week for the last month or so. Any ideas/reassurance?

Sorry, just moving this thread into the public view

When my twins were small, they had a similar problem but with formula milk, the Dr prescribed Ysoy tinned powdered milk, they were not affected after that. Some babies are just sensitive to other than breast milk.

If you are feeling ill and you are feeding baby yourself, then baby might be ingesting the same through your milk, wether it be a tummy bug or something else, ie something you have eaten or drunk. Too much fruit or fruit juice can upset their tummies too if you are breatfeeding.

hello enid

goodness, i had forgotten all about this! no great words of wisdom, i'm afraid. it passed and i eventually attributed it to a lingering virus.

we haven't had any problems with cow's milk or in fact with vomiting since.

my only advice is to take her to a paediatrician or at least gp if you can.

hope she is better soon.

lol BK, love the OAMS!

My dd vomits sometimes if she chokes on something, don't know if this could be the cause. Sometimes if she eats a rusk or something she will keep a bit in her cheek, then when I'm feeding her it will dislodge and she'll choke and vomit (copiously!)

She did exactly the same last night, screamed when I put her down then puked for England when I picked her up. I actually feel sick today too so I am thinking maybe its a virus. Her bottom seems normal though...I have changed to a goats milk formula anyway, might not be a bad thing as she also has a few excema-y patches and she's quite 'mucusy' too so we'll see if it helps. If she does the same tonight I'll take her to the gp. Just baby rice, formula and water today to see if that helps as well. Thanks, E.

Glad to see this thread, as I wash another vomity blouse. My dd is 6 months old and I had been following Annabel Karmel's timetable. This is the week where we switch from fruit and veg to fish and chicken. DD vomited for two days in a row. I decided that the problem was a combination (on Monday) of Annabel (recommending grated raw apple, which made dd choke. What was the woman thinking of? What was I thinking of for following such a stupid idea?) and (Tuesday) me (giving dd her bedtime milk too soon after her supper). I made the diet simpler yesterday, and spread out the feeds more, and this seems to have worked. Do other people think the 6-9 month diet in this book is too rich for a baby?
