To what extent does its taste differ to tinned tuna?

well might you ask DG

To what extent do fresh peas differ in taste from cannned..

or carrots

or tomatoes

canned tuna is cooked .. we grill fresh tuna on the barbie after marinating it - tastes very different from canned

Cappucino · 11/07/2006 17:23

it's a whole different ballgame DG

buy it fresh on the day you're going to eat it, don't freeze it

it's like the steak of the fish world

alibubbles · 11/07/2006 18:13

Fresh tuna is wonderful, DD kills to eat it raw if it is super fresh, just like sashimi really.

Really good very briefly cooked on either sided with ginger chilli and lime. Mmmm

Tinned tuna is dry, tastless and sticks to the roof of ones mouth, only good for tuna mayo and sweetcorn with tabasco sarnies!

Thanks for your replies. If it was only me involved, I would have bought fresh tuna ages ago and certianly would buy it tomorrow based on what you have told me - I love fish.

However, I was asking because ds1 doesn't like fish but eats tinned tuna. I keep wishing I could buy fresh fish but I know he will not eat it. One thing he likes are my home made fishcakes: loves them with tinned tuna, will tolerate half tinned tuna and half fresh cod, but last week when I made them with fresh and smoked haddock, it was not a hit. I was just wondering if I could buy fresh tuna and satisfy his need for tuna whilst at the same time satisfy my desire to buy fresh fish, but from what you say, it would seem not.

Oh well

DG I'm sure that this would work

it still tastes like tuna only better

it would still be fresh fish and from what I understand the omega oils in tuna are destroyed by canning so it would be better for him

also you wouldn't have to eat yours in a fishcake would you? just ds...

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 12:37

I don't know how old your ds is but I just wouldn't tell him (at first) that it was tuna (if he's young enough to get away with it!)

Fresh tuna when cooked is more similar to meat really - it has a much firmer texture than most meat and comes apart in chunks when you cut into it (rather than flakes like white fish).

I am not a fish fan at all but I love fresh tuna.

(PS did you see the pictures of david tennant in the daily mail on Monday? - think it was Monday. Him on holiday in swimming shorts!)

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 12:39

much firmer texture than most fish I meant to say

DumbledoresGirl · 12/07/2006 13:01

Cappucino & Foxinsocks - he would know, believe me! He is 10 and passed the being fooled stage. He wouldn't mind if it tasted the same but if it tasted fishy, then he would know and object. But maybe, from what you say, it wouldn't taste too fishy, more meaty? I think I will have to buy some for myself and try it out.

No I missed pics of DT. Are they online? Was he gorgeous? Silly me, of course he was!

if I tell you it was titled 'Is this the palest man in the galaxy' that will give you a clue

(you know how I feel about DT - I just don't get it!!)

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 13:05

and on the tuna front, definitely try it yourself - I have been completely converted and now eat fresh tuna once a week

DumbledoresGirl · 12/07/2006 13:07

I have other things I should be doing but....
Phoar! take a look at him here!

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 13:09

lol - you are lucky expat hasn't seen this!

DumbledoresGirl · 12/07/2006 13:10

Oh they are very unkind about him. I am married to a man with similar colouring as him and it doesn't bother me. So what if he is not bronzed? He won't die early of skin cancer - good on him!

OP posts:
Cappucino · 13/07/2006 08:37

DG I think that bird is far too young for him

he'll not be happy

(for now at least the thought of DT and tuna are one and the same, and I could quite fancy both tonight for when the kids have gone to bed )

DumbledoresGirl · 13/07/2006 08:53

hmmmm a woman of taste Cappucino!

OP posts:
Cappucino · 13/07/2006 08:58

it's tricky. the kids are the problem I think rather than the age difference.

I did wonder about applying to be Dr Who's new assistant but I didn't know if he'd want the baggage, he seems to travel quite light through time and space and I can just see struggling out into a time war with a buggy

and I'm worried for dd1 about the disabled accessibility of that Tardis

DumbledoresGirl · 13/07/2006 09:18

Oh I am sure the TARDIS can cope with disability access - those doors are wider than they look!

My worry would be ds2 screaming and running away hysterically every time the Doctor came near - at least, that is what he does at the first sign of him on tv. I would be torn between running after him to reassure him and staying put and falling gracefully into DT's firm embrace: not a dilemma any mother should have to confront.
