Sunday Roast

I love a roast dinner dinner on a Sunday now the weather is colder, but other than chicken or a small pork joint, I cannot afford to buy a nice joint of beef or lamb.

How much would you normally spend on a joint of meat for a Sunday dinner?

go to morrisons, you can buy lots of cheaper joints of meat there for very reasonable prices.

For two of us I would spend up to £7 on a chicken ( will make 2 or 3 meals)

£5 on a pork joint (again we would use leftovers for sandwiches)

the beef roast we are having tonight cost £4 but will only last us one meal.

Lamb you can get lamb henry's or similar relatively cheaply if you shop arouns.

Morrisons also do large turkey legs most of the year round for about £2 - 3

I think pot-roast beef is lovely this time of year and you can get quite chunky pieces of rolled brisket relatively cheaply - about £7/kilo. Today we had boiled smoked gammon which cost about £4/kilo. Doesn't shrink and there's plenty left for sandwiches and other dishes next week. I tend to spend about £12 on an 'everyday' roast dinner... up to £25 for a special occasion.

Asda 2 for 7 or 3 for 10 often a good way to buy meat.
I must admit I don't bother with lamb th as it is so expensive and fatty if you buy cheap.
I just love the trimmings more than meat.

I keep an eye out for when supermarkets have those vac packed beef joints on offer and slow roast it. I normally get a few and freeze, you can flyer get a decent sized one for six or seven quid.

I only like roast beef cooked so it's falling apart though.

Agree with above that morrisons is excellent for meat, buy what's on offer.

Also aldi, they do mini turkey roasts which are good for a midweek roast.

We buy big joints, that will make at least 3, sometimes even 4 meals for four. Roast one day, cold meat with bubble and squeak the next day, and at least one curry or pie. Sometimes I make rissoles with the very little bits I pick off the bones.
Much more economical than buying small joints.

I have read that if you go to Waitrose on Sunday, around noon/1pm, you will find joints of meat reduced as they are trying to shift them for Sunday lunch and few people will buy a big joint on Monday. I guess other stores my do the same thing so might be worth checking this out.

I buy from our farm shop so it probably is more expensive. I tend to pay around £10-12 for beef or lamb and get a meal for five plus another for two out of it.
However it's absolutely right about supermarkets - Sainsburys quite often does good deals on large joints.
