Onions, garlic, minced beef (few veggies if you want like cubed carrots and peas), fried then mixed with a jar of pasta sauce and a blob of brown sauce. Make yer mash with butter and milk or cream, bung the beef mix in a dish, blob the mash on top, grate over cheese and cook in oven until mash is browned.

Minced lamb or else it is cottage pie not shepherds.

Rhubarb · 08/07/2006 17:54

lamb/beef - WHATEVER!

cottage pie has a crust on top so nerrr! The mash is supposed to represent the woolly sheep.

Stop starting SG or I'll throw holy water on you!

I make Mary Berry's recipe - its great

onions, celery, carrot browned, then mince, then add 1 tb sp flour(to thicken) 1 tb sp tomato puree and 2 tb sp worcester sauce (I kid you not) and 1/2 pint of stock. its fab [yummy icon]

I add cheese to my mash like Rhubarb

Veggie version:

Fry 2 x chopped onion, 2 x peeled, julienned carrot, 2 x celery sticks, & 3 x green/red pepper.

Add 100g sliced mushrooms.

When veg is tender add EITHER 1 pack 'Beanfeast' (or supermarket equivalent) made up as instructions OR 2/3 pack Quorn (or equivalent) veg mince + jar pasta sauce.

Throw in a handful of frozen peas if liked. You could also add tin/frozen sweetcorn, cooked lentils, fresh/tinned tomatoes, tinned kidney beans.

Thicken a bit with veggie gravy powder if necessary, & bring gently to simmer.

Tip into oven dish.

Top with mashed potato (peel potatoes if you can be bothered, cut into smallish bits, cook in boiling water until tender - then mash with fork or masher, lump of butter & slosh of milk). You can include carrot, parsnip or swede as well as potato if liked.

Fork mash to make rough surface which will brown nicely, sprinkle with grated cheese (good way to use up old/dry cheese).

200C, 30 minutes.
