Tofu?

As part of my move towards accidental veganism, a friend pointed out that we should try tofu. Probably we should. I've always found it not very tasty. Is it actually good for you? Is it high in protein? (What is it?)

And most importantly, how can you cook it to not be gross?

thumbs up tp tofu in this household - I was practically vegan for 10 years and still not big on bovine led meals

scramble it with curry powder, bp for breakfast
marinade it

dd likes it straight out of packet.

good in spring rolls.

you want a good marinade well here it is

2 Tbl soy sauce
2 tsp sesame oil
1 garlic
1 tsp white vinegar
1 Tbl tahini
black pepper
1 tsp something sweet in your cupbaord... sugar, honey, molasses
about 20 drops of plum sauce or back bean sauce

put in stews it absorbs the flavours.

We use quite a lot of tofu in this house as dp and dss are vegetarian and over the years I have begun to like it.
I too would second the marinated Cauldron product as an intro to tofu, alternatively your local Chinese takeawy probably does a fairly nice tofu dish that you could try out. Ours does fab satay tofu!

Again a Teriake style marinade makes all the difference as tofu really absorbs flavours and if you can get it fresh from an Asian supermarket it makes all the difference, it is generally much nicer than the packet stuff.

Nicest tofu I've ever had was a plain block of fresh silken tofu served with just soy sauce and bonito flakes but that was in Japan where they take it quite seriously.

I finally got some today - got the smokey kind, as a local veganish friend had recommended. I thought it was quite nice, not trying too hard to be meaty, but with a good umami taste to it, anyway.

DS1 liked the tofu, as it is Japanese (and hence ninja food). DS2 liked it too, and isn't impressed by Japanese-ness.

I think even plain tofu would be ok, the texture didn't bug me, thankfully. (I can't stand raw mushrooms thanks to texture, so was worried ...)
