Just curious.... I'm not talking Proust's madeleines or the food that reminds you of childhood, so much as particular food things that remind you of something quite specific.

I work from home and when my dp is due to be out in the evenings I quite often grill peppers at lunchtime in advance for dinnner (he doesn't like them). And every time I do it - like today - and the house fills with the smell, it reminds me of the day eight months ago when my waters broke. The peppers were still in the oven when dp put it on to warm towels for the baby eight hours later...

Dh cooks a lovely Elizabeth David pasta sauce recipe with garlic, lemon, smoked bacon, chicken livers and softly scrambled eggs. Every time I taste it I get a double whammy - back to the time when we were a completely carefree couple, and back to both times after our babies were born, when I could finally sink my teeth into liver and barely-cooked egg, with a clear conscience.
Er, what happened to the peppers MI? They didn't end up stuck to dd2's newborn person, I hope.

I want that recipe, please! Fab.

I can't actually remember what happened to the peppers (which I'm going to eat with anchovies and chopped artichoke hearts - another no-no - and pasta and parmesan); I may even be exaggerating and have removed them myself. I do distinctly remember he reminded me the next time I suggested grilling some.

DH cooks a lovely mackeral, pine nut and currant pasta with a fab thing to sprinkle on top which is essentially golden fried breadcrumbs mixed with parsley, chilis and lemon zest - I bought him a day of a wonderful chef to come round and teach him italian cookery as an xmas pressie, and it always reminds me of being pregnant and sitting in the kitchen taking tiny sips of wine watching him learn to cook.

He cooked it on valentines day for me and took me straight back to being pg!

From my childhood- boiled chicken a mash, that my Mum used to make when we were ill. Bland as bland can be but tasted great after a week of being ill and eating nothing.

From being pg, throwing up too many times on a variety of things I've not touched since! And blackcurrant jam and toast from when dd2 was born. We all sat up in our bed, dd1 staring at her little sis while I pigged out on toast!

Prawn cocktail crisp sandwiches = all I could eat for the first 4 months of DD's pregnancy. Must have been the salt - trying to numb the sickness feeling.

LOL mummytojames - you must have had a seriously pregnant brain. Fish pie always reminds me of my mother - she brought a vat of it to my house when I slipped a disc and all my flatmates were thrilled and ate most of it. I got some though. She also used to make this amazing hotdogs in plum and mustard sauce thing, god it was wonderful and I wish I knew where the recipe was. I had it instead of birthday cake one year.
