What else to have with home made soup?

Ok, I had already made a huge pan of home made vegetable soup for tea for the family tonight and was just going to have it with crusty bread. However have just found out we are being joined by 4 members of family. There will be more than enough soup but what else can I serve with it without having to make a main meal? It seems a bit lame just to offer soup for supper!

Homemade chips?

Cheese and fruit?

Nice homemade cake to follow?

Bread and cheese, or cheese on toast?

If I were going to someone's house as a last minute arrangement to eat, I would not expect a three course extravaganza. I would be appreciate of whatever was served.

Potatoes, lovely big floury spuds, served on side plate and you drop into your soup as you see fit! Loved this as a child :)

Well it's decided. A mixture of home made chips ( and potatoes for the health conscious) and I am off through to the kitchen now to make a lovely cake, no hassle.

As always MN to the rescue, thank you all.

I was just going to suggest cheese scones or baked potatoes, but you are all sorted anyway Smile

I would use the bread for croutons. Plus lob some stock in the soup with more liquid to double the quantity.

MindyWiller · 02/11/2013 11:50

i was going to suggest cheese scones and maybe just a simple "help yourself" buffet with cold meat, cheese and salady stuff.

I have toast and paté or toast and a bit of brie or somesuch.

Yum. Must get some soup out of the freezer.
