Frozen cod

I bought some Youngs frozen atlantic cod, thinking id defrost it and batter it. However just took it out the freezer and it says best cooked from frozen in the oven. Can I still defrost and batter it? I'm assuming I cannot batter and fry while still frozen? (1st time ever cooking fish-except the already battered type)
Thanks.

Could you try another way? With white frozen fish I put in an oven bag.. cover in milk.. sprinkle on chives, tie bag up and put in oven.

I can't see why you can't defrost it though if you really want to batter it though.

I suppose I could, just wanted to try battering it. Not got an oven bag however, how else can I do it? Thanks. Smile

No reason why you can't defrost and batter it, but it may be floppier than a fresh piece. Has it got skin on? If not, it may just fall to pieces when you defrost it. Not a lot of help I know.

I am very old and have learned my cooking by trial and error. If you aren't cooking for a posh dinner party give it a go, it will taste great but may not look so glamorous.

Any way you can cover it with milk I should think. Stick a bit of tinfoil over it or something.

I can't see why you can't defrost and batter though but as has been said it may be a bit floppier than fresh.

Let it defrost then dry it thoroughly on kitchen towels?

The issue is the excess moisture. so I would defrost in fridge, which has a dehydrating effect anyway, then press gently between folded sheets of kitchen paper..
