Do you put rice in your dc lunchbox?

Yep. Paranoid cook here. "Is it done...?" will be on my grave. So I cooked some dal in an optimistic attempt to liven up the systema surprise tomorrow. I could do pitta but reckon rice would be optimum.

If googled, rice at room temperature for three hours is not good. This makes it a potential CIA grade pharmaceutical killing agent by 12pm...am I being hysterical?
Don't answer yes unless you have put it in the lunchbox. I won't be able to relax.

I wouldn't. Rice can harbour a particularly nasty bug.

Maybe if you flash cool it and keep an ice pack in the lunch box?

iteminbaggingarea · 24/10/2013 20:01

What makes sushi ok then? Sugar maybe? But yes, I had thought of putting an ice pack in, there is an under-pocket in the bag for one. You haven't done it then?

No I haven't. DS isn't desperate enough for cold rice that I'd risk food poisoning tbh!

Bunbaker · 24/10/2013 20:05

Sushi is also kept chilled.

Having suffered badly after eating rice at a Chinese buffet, I would err on the side of caution and not do rice.

(I know it was the rice because the rest of my family ate the same as I did, but not the rice)

According to this sushi rice is more likely to make you ill than the fish Grin www.livescience.com/32163-is-sushi-safe-to-eat.html

Looks like the rice is bathed in acid/vinegar to make it safe.

iteminbaggingarea · 24/10/2013 20:17

Pickled. That makes sense and also glad that I am not hysterical. Hm. Wrap with yoghurt and corriander then. Any suggestions for additions welcome.

I let them take sushi - add vinegar + salt + sugar to rice.

mawbroon · 24/10/2013 20:30

How about freezing the rice in single portions then popping a frozen pack into the lunchbox in the morning. It should be defrosted by lunchtime.

birdybear · 24/10/2013 20:31

cold rice is the biggest cause of food poisoning in the uk so i have been told! Sushi has mirin in plus is eaten straight away and is kept chilled.

iteminbaggingarea · 24/10/2013 20:37

I can confidently say that if I was defrosting it, then I, personally would cook it through thoroughly after defrostation (sp). Defrosting rules fill me with the fear. I understand that it is about it staying at a certain temperature for too long. Would that be better than cooled and icepacked rice? I should just give up on the idea.

I think rice carries a particularly nasty food poisoning bug that is difficult to kill by cooking (although numbers will be reduced) and as such is best eaten soon after cooking before the live bacteria multipy.

Or something like that.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 24/10/2013 20:40

Really? What about O'nigiri and bento boxes? 90% of the japanese children and parents have this for lunch at work and at school. It is not chilled and I didn't see them falling.
I come from an era of rice salads (boak) then again on picnics and parties nobody died... Confused
It seems to be a mainly english problem!

iteminbaggingarea · 24/10/2013 20:49

So sushi has other ingredients that pickle it which is not going to happen tomorrow morning - I am just not that woman. I have had rice salads and survived, I suppose I just wanted to see if someone does the rubbish English version weekly in the old lunch box.

This explains all about rice and food poisoning.

iteminbaggingarea · 24/10/2013 21:47

Everything. Apart from a human experiment.
