Hi there Smile

I am planning on making meatballs with a tomato sauce for supper one Saturday evening, nothing too difficult but tasty, the simpler the better, and would love some recipe ideas.

I've already got the garlic bread, which prompted me to make the recipe myself for a change. We love onions and mushrooms, but happy to use other ingredients if need be. Low fat is fine too. Please help.

Aw thanks, sharond, I was becoming a little despondent thinking nobody was going to reply Smile

Looks easy too, which is great :)

I sometimes use gino d'campo's recipe which is delicious but a little fiddly - if I want to make quick meatballs I just buy good quality sausages, take off skin, cut up and roll into little balls. Shallow fry til browned then finish cooking in sauce which is just onions, tin of chopped tomatoes, dash of Worcestershire sauce, dash of ketchup, and a little ground nutmeg to take some of the sharpness of the tomatoes. Yummy :)

sharond101 · 24/10/2013 22:00

they are yummy. The onion can be finely chopped rather than grated and it's an easier mix to work with that way.

mousmous · 24/10/2013 22:07

for the meatballs I use 500g mince (prefer half beef half pork). in a fod processor I chop 1 onion with 2 slices of bread, pinch of salt, dried herbs to taste (organo, herbs de provence). mix all together and form the meatballs.

for the sauce fry a diced onion, add oregano, garlic (fresh or paste), add the meatballs to colour them a bit. add a tin of passata or tinned tomatoes. leave to simmer for 20 min or so. yum.

This is a classic -- I bake the meatballs instead of frying because it's less trouble and they don't fall apart.

You need nigellas meatballs in your life. Simple and tasty and the sauce is delicious (works well as a pizza base too). Can't do links as I'm on my phone but google nigella meatballs - you won't be disappointed

MrsPnut · 26/10/2013 08:39

I make nigella's meatballs too and my family love them. I make her tomato sauce more than any other too. here

pud1 · 26/10/2013 09:23

Another recommendation for nigella. They are lovely

Thanks, all, for your input, almost forgot I started this thread Blush

I'll have a go at the Nigella ones Smile

Thanks again x

Hi,

a bit late, but this is the quick and tasty recipe I use

I use pork shoulder for meatballs and add - parsley, lovage - only a little as it's strong, a couple of dried chillis, and 2-3 sage leaves - not too much as that's strong, too. S+P. I don't always add breadcrums, but if I do, it's about 2 slices of wholemeal to 500g of minced pork.

When she was little, dd named them spiky meatballs, and we have to make a bigger quantity as some always disappear 'in transit'.

CMP69 · 16/11/2013 18:55

I do Jamie Oliver if I want spicy ones and Nigella's if I want smooth and delicious Grin

The guardian has a recipe article for this today:

(but I think our suggestions may be quicker and tastier!)

: )

I make my meatballs the same as mousmous but I fry off the onion before adding to the mixture and I don't fry the meatballs. I make the tomato sauce, get it nicely reduced, pop the walnut-sized meatballs on top, cover and simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir gently after 10 mins and they don't break up.

ItsTheOnlyWayToLIve · 24/11/2013 08:25

Thanks again all Smile

I have since found a recipe for Italian meatballs that I've done a couple of times from the 'Skinny slow cooker recipes' book, and they taste great. In fact, there are a few recipes in that book which I've followed and can thoroughly recommend, only £1.99 to download onto a Kindle Smile

It's great also to make them in different ways, so your input has been greatly appreciated, and I'll give other recipes for the meatballs a go Smile
