Do you peel mushrooms?

I was just watching Four in a Bed - and one of the contestants insisted on having her mushrooms peeled prior to cooking.

Thinking back, my mum used to do this.

I don't bother - if there are any chunks of soil I will brush off, but that's it?

Am I right or just lazy?? Grin

I tend to peel but I have used unpeeled too, think it depends on what they look like, I.e. How clean they are.

Lunaballoon · 20/10/2013 18:32

I never peel. Life's too short!

Hawkmoth · 20/10/2013 18:34

No. I cut the base off the stems and wipe over with damp kitchen roll.

UsedToBeNDP · 20/10/2013 18:41

No. I do the same as you, OP.

Heymacarena · 20/10/2013 18:55

Phew.

Not that it affects anyone else - as I am the only one in our house who eats mushrooms. The others don't like them. Fools,

Will continue to keep it simple :)

Thanks!

I have a vegetable brush and use that to get rid of any dirt.

EBearhug · 25/10/2013 00:37

If they've been hanging around a bit long and need using up badly, then I usually peel them, but if they're fresh, then no, just brush off any bits of compost. Old mushrooms peel easily anyway.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 25/10/2013 00:43

I gently pull the stalk out cos that's the dirtiest bit and then the skin is easy to peel if you grab it from underneath. You can't wash them cos they just soak up water and go mushy when cooking.

OldBeanbagz · 25/10/2013 00:55

Peeling - no way.

I barely had time to brush the compost off yesterday. I figured they were organic so a bit of dirt didn't really matter?

Kids seemed to have survived Grin

Ai'll have you know that Ai have a mushroom brush.

That's right, a brush whose sole and dedicated purpose is to brush mushrooms. So that's what I do with my mushrooms - brush them.

justalilmummy · 25/10/2013 01:08

Peel mushrooms? Ive never heard of this??
Then again I buy them ready cut up so what do I know {grin}

justalilmummy · 25/10/2013 01:09

Damn! I mean big smiley face! I'll try again Grin

EBearhug · 25/10/2013 01:27

I have a mushroom brush, too. From Lakeland, I believe.

I don't actually use it, though.

BearsBeetsBattlestarGalactica · 25/10/2013 02:47

I peel.

Mainly because I enjoy it and get a strange sense of satisfication from doing so.

I do like peeling things in general...

ILoveAFullFridge · 25/10/2013 07:48

In with you OP.

But sometimes, if I'm eating a nice big fresh mushroom raw, I'll peel it while I'm eating it. It gives the same sort of satisfaction as picking at a scab, or squeezing a spot, but without the boak-factor.

Longdistance · 25/10/2013 07:54

Jamie Oliver peels his mushrooms...so there you go.

I only peel them if I have time. If m in a hurry, the layer stays on.

HotDogSlaughter · 25/10/2013 07:55

Absolutely I peel. I was very carefully, peel and cut out the stem. I am Italian and we are very fussy with mushroom preparation.

pregnantpause · 25/10/2013 08:04

I feel a right troglodyte. Peel mushrooms? You can PEEL mushrooms? revelation to me -- walks away from thread shaking head, looking for mushrooms to peel.Grin

ILoveAFullFridge · 25/10/2013 09:04

What's with not eating the stem? My dad won't eat the stem, either?

Did you know that if you chop the stem finely, or slice thinly across the grain, and fry it, it goes all crunchy and turns into the best, most delicious, intensely mushroomry croutons?

Trills · 25/10/2013 09:08

My mum does this.

I don't.

Trills · 25/10/2013 09:08

It is quite a satisfying thing to do though. Like squeezing sausages out of their skins.

WilsonFrickett · 25/10/2013 11:47

FullFridge I just trim the bottom off the stem, where it's actually been in the compost or shit as it's also known

I only peel them if they're shrivelled up.
