Breakfast ideas for teen who doesn't like cereal

Trying to think of alternatives for dd (16) who really doesn't like cereal. She gets free toast at break time, so doesn't need to be huge amount. looking for nutritious ideas that aren't bread based, beyond beans, bacon, eggs in various forms, fruit/fruit salad, yoghurt, smoothie. Used to have things lkke crumpets, toasties, teacakes etc but with toast at break want something 'unbready' and nutritious. she usually has a glass of milk with whatever. Thank you

Porridge, stewed apple, sultanas with milk and honey on top
Plain yoghurt with fruit e.g. banana (and honey)

We have the former in Winter and the latter in Summer

Hash browns & beans
Kedgeree
Kippers
Potato cakes
Pancakes

My daughter's started eating polenta sometimes. It's fairly quick in the microwave. We add cheese.

YDdraigGoch · 11/10/2013 11:38

My DDs like bacon sandwiches, cake, eggy bread, the new fangled breakfast biscuits, smoothies, crumpets, pancakes, piklets, mug of hot chocolate...

FrauMoose · 11/10/2013 11:44

Pancakes are a favourite breakfast - though better at the weekend when there's a bit more time.

My DD (14) dislikes cereal and toast. She eats porridge with Aldi's Harvest Morn milled linseeds with berries and seeds , some frozen mixed berries and sometimes honey or syrup. She also makes smooties in the blender with yogurt bananas and frozen mixed berries. She sometimes adds porridge oats to the mix to make a thickie smoothie .DD also likes Japanese food so has Japanese rice with Nori (seaweed) and Miso soup.

DS2 goes to school on a fishfinger sandwich! Fish is brain food, right? Just leave the bread out. Smile

lilolilmanchester · 11/10/2013 20:14

Actually think dd would love fish fingers for breakfast ... And why not? Was also thinking home made rice pudding no different to rice crispies?! Add a bit of stewed fruit. Just out of new ideas that aren't 'bready'

Have a look on Pinterest for things like honey oat bars and breakfast sandwiches. Smoothies are always a good option too, if you have a blender Smile

DD1 likes cheese & grapes or sausage sandwiches for breakfast. (she's 2.8)

DH has cheese & ham, eggs or a protein smoothie.

lilolilmanchester · 11/10/2013 23:13

Thanks both. As per my OP am looking for things that aren't 'bready' and she already has eggs/smoothies. Good idea re homemade cereal bars. Made some oat muffins the other week and they went down well.

Chopped fresh fruit (banana, pear, strawberries, blueberries etc) with natural greek yogurt and a spoonful of honey. Breakfast of the gods. Nice with a sprinkle of granola on top.

Selks · 11/10/2013 23:46

Or Bircher muesli - delicious. Nice with a few walnuts on top.

Nigella's breakfast bars, delicious and really easy for Dd to make a batch at the weekend. Mine like those breakfast biscuits with a glass of milk or fruit juice. Feels like a snack but does the same job as cereal.

Years ago we had a Polish au pair and enjoyed some fab breakfasts of cold meats, tomatoes, potato salad etc, really filled us up for the day and quick enough to grab some bits from the fridge if you don't have time for a leisurely one.

Hot smoothie thing?
Banana, handful oats, horlicks powder, honey and hot milk
Nice with peanut butter too

rootypig · 12/10/2013 04:00

Make your own potato cakes (sweet potato is good), freeze, and toss them in the toaster. Basically use a pancakey recipe with cinammon and mashed sweet potato added (quantities not critical, you want a thickish dropping consistency). Have just posted about these on another thread, am obsessed Grin

Most of Europe has bread rolls with ham and cheese and possibly a hard boiled egg.

Fruit?

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 12/10/2013 19:08

Potato waffles, done in the toaster. With eggs/bacon/cheese/baked beans.

Wow, loads more great ideas, thank you
