Isn't hamburger American for beefburger?

nicnack2 · 29/06/2006 22:47

maybe when they were first invented one was pork and then beef bit like the difference between cottage and shepherds pie?

southeastastra · 29/06/2006 22:47

one's from hamburg, the other is from beefburg

marthamoo · 29/06/2006 22:50

Beefburgers have beef in them
Hamburgers have

beef in them

Originally hamburgers were from Hamburg, which is why they were so-called. Nothing to do with the meat content, which has always been beef. So beefburgers are essentially the same thing, but an attempt to let people know what is actually in them.

Frankfurters would probably now be called porkfurters if "frank" meant a type of meat other than pork. IYSWIM.
