Sweedish meatballs. Healthy or unhealthy?

If considered unhealthy (i.e. processed) - what sort of category do they fall into? Birds Eye 100% haddock fillet fish fingers or Crappy supermarket own brand, scraped-off-the-floor-bits-of-chicken-rolled together nuggets?

I think they're a good food to feed our children every so often. DH looks at them with disdain. He's a food snob.

You can get organic ones at Sainsburys and Waitrose

We have them weekly, DH can't cope without them

I make meatballs and there's nothing hugely unhealthy about them:
mince
parmesan
egg
parsley
semolina (!)

and garlic

Dh makes meatballs too but they're different to the Sedish meatballs. His are more like burgers rolled into balls.

The Swedish meatballs are great for picnics and quick meals when there's not much else in the house.

what's different about Swedish meatballs? I've never tried them.

Blu · 29/06/2006 13:36

I buy them sometimes - the organic ones - and can't bring myself to think that anything Swedish is unwholesome!

zippitippitoes · 29/06/2006 13:37

I've never had one! they look yukky in ikea

LotosEater · 29/06/2006 13:38

I bought some once - I thought they were horrid - and the kids wouldn't eat 'em either

DumbledoresGirl · 29/06/2006 13:43

I have made meatballs once but it was a lot of faff. OTOH, I buy the Swedish meatballs practically every week, if I can find them, certainly fortnightly, as my family all love them. We have them with homemade tomato sauce and pasta.

I don't think of them as processed food but couldn't care less if the consensus is that they are, as they are delicious!

TheBlonde · 29/06/2006 14:01

Swedish ones are usually a mix of pork and beef

Probably not very healthy but yummy! I love having them in Ikea. I do make my own meatballs too but they are very different. I find the Swedish ones good if I am doing a lazy dinner for the kids (eg fishfingers) as my oldest doesn't like fish so she gets some meatballs - and they are very quick to cook in the microwave.

Tinker · 29/06/2006 14:13

The Ikea ones are gorgeous - that's our special day out every school holiday to eat them in teh cafe. Agree, nothing Swedish could be bad!

Blu · 29/06/2006 14:17

Beatie: Look on the ingredients list. if there are lots of things you don't recognise or sounds like sci-fi - your dh has won the bet!

they do taste quite salty.

My dh tried swedish meatballs ages ago and loved them, then i couldnt find them again. And yesterday i was in the Coop and they were buy one get one free at £1.99. So i put one packet in the freezer and ones in the fridge at the mo and dh ate a swedish meatball sandwich earlier on and said it was yum!

Bananaknickers · 29/06/2006 16:31
