Can I still use salmon steaks that have been in the freezer for at least a year?

Found them when having a clear out...

Not sure I'd want to defrost & just pan-fry as I would fresh ones. Anything eg. a pie I could use them up in?

Or just defrost & treat the cats?

TIA

not sure but I'll check in later to see if there are any authoritative answers cos there's a tuna steak in the bottom of our freezer of unknown age

I believe arctic explorers have been known to eat woolly mammoth dug out of the permafrost...

I would.

I think frozen fish starts to degrade after 3 or 4 months. I personally wouldn't use them.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/06/2006 22:04

artic explorers have been known to eat their own shoes. doesn;t mean we all have to

hulababy · 28/06/2006 22:06

I wouldn't. I only tend to keep fresh fish and meat (which I then freeze) for about a month.

hana · 28/06/2006 22:07

i'd chuck them too, not even for the cats!

olivia35 · 28/06/2006 23:05

Believe me the cats will be fine...if I HAD a woolly mammoth to give 'em it'd be stripped clean in minutes!

Right, lucky old them - the verdict seems definitely to be not fit for humans.

I'd use them.

Miaow.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 28/06/2006 23:36

I got food poisoning from salmon last Friday so I wouldn't.

Gingerbear · 28/06/2006 23:45

I think they will be OK, but a bit dried out around the edges.

emmawill · 28/06/2006 23:49

Hmmm no I love cats please don't feed it to them!

hunkermunker · 28/06/2006 23:53

Hmm, maybe I wouldn't

Oh, who knows. It would depend what they looked like when they were defrosted, I think

hunkermunker · 28/06/2006 23:54

Actually, reading on - I would.

Don't listen to me though, I'm clearly barking.

fattiemumma · 28/06/2006 23:55

i think if its frozen from fresh everything stays pretty much ok.

i think you just have to watch how old they were when they went in, and that they havent been defrosted already.

soapbox · 29/06/2006 00:02

I wouldn't. Even commercially frozen salmon is not stored for longer than 6 months. Salmon is about the only fish this applies to - virtually every other kind of fish is ok. Salmon has a high level of fat just below the skin and it is this that goes rancid if frozen for too long.

I don;t think it will kill you - but won't taste so nice.

Ahh the joys of recollecting many hours spent auditing a large fish company up in Grimsby[grim]

hunkermunker · 29/06/2006 00:03

Oh, I wouldn't then.
