Gammon joint - what do you eat it with?

Just that really, I've got a yen to cook a rolled gammon joint in the slow cooker but I've never done it before...Presumably when it's done you just slice it up, but what would you serve it with? There won't be any gravy so would mash be a bit dry unless I make it with half a block of butter?

Roasted root veg - carrots, parsnips etc - and red skinned potatoes cut into chunky wedges and roasted with garlic & rosemary. We usually have gammon with these sides over Christmas at some stage, nice and hearty.

Carrot and swede mash & steamed greens?

Colcannon?

I do gammon quite often and tend to serve it with a wet veg like ratatouille or braised red cabbage and a potato dish like Dauphinoise or carrot/swede/kale mash (with lots of butter!).

Oh yes, yum! Love braised red cabbage, and colcannon, that's perfect thanks!

Oh hang on, no. Colcannon AND braised cabbage might be too much cabbage for me to pass off in one meal. Roasted veg it is!

I boil the gammon, then use the water as stock to make pumpkin risotto. Works well with most types of squash (butternut, crown prince etc). Slice up gammon, serve with risotto and lots of parmesan - yum!

Chips and baked beans Blush

I cook the gammon and then use the left over liquid to cook cabbage in and serve with mashed potatoes. Sometimes have cheesy leeks with it too. That's one of my favourite childhood dinners! You've made me have a hankering for it now. :)

miffybun73 · 02/10/2013 09:50

Oooh, Poledre that sounds like a great idea.

I do cook properly honestly, but every now and then just have to have chips and Heinz baked Beans :)

Poledra · 02/10/2013 09:57

Don't we all, miffy? DH does a great egg'n'chips, and sometimes that's all you want!

I love it with potato gratin and sprouts, it's my favourite dinner. But it has to be glazed in the oven after being slow cooked (which is fine because the oven's on for the gratin anyway) with brown sugar, honey and a liberal sprinkling of ground mace.

Cauliflower cheese and baked potatoes?
Roast veg?
Cabbage and mash with a parsley sauce?

21mealspluscake · 02/10/2013 11:58

Love it in thick slices with boiled leeks, carrots and new potatoes with lots of parsley sauce. Make a roux for the sauce using butter, flour and some of the liquid from the gammon then finish with single cream and lots of (curly) parsley.

Second Poledra on ham and egg and chips with the rest!

wheredidiputit · 02/10/2013 12:59

I have as a roast dinner. Or the traditional with boiled potatoes and cabbage.

ShoeWhore · 05/10/2013 17:18

Some fab ideas here.

I really like it with baked potatoes and homemade coleslaw. And lots of mustard and a pickled onion or two!

Loving the braised cabbage idea though. and the leeks. And colcannon - in fact most of the ideas on this thread sound yum.

notanyanymore · 05/10/2013 17:20

Its nice with macaroni cheese, or pineapple salsa, or parsley sauce, or onion sauce. I love a good gammon! :)
