Can you cook a curry in a slow cooker?

Just wondering.

Basis of all curries is the melted onions, ginger and garlic with whole spices. And then the meat or chicken. And then the spices. Could you prepare it all in a saucepan, then add to slow cooker?

Has anyone successfully done this and served it to a curry expert (in my case a Bengali husband) with positive feedback?

never done it but it just essentially a stew isn't it so it should be fine

I make curries in the slow cooker loads, fried onions, ginger-garlic paste and all your masalas mixed together in the bottom of the pot, with tomatoes or coconut milk or whatever 'wet' ingredients you're using and then pop the meat or poultry pieces on top. Cook on LOW all day. Smile

I make curries in my slow cooker all the time and they always come out fab, it's my favourite way of making them now

Thanks everyone. Do you follow recipes or just get creative? Do you fry the spices eg haldi, curry powder, cumin, chilli powder, with the onions in a saucepan first?

Basically, I prepare the whole curry as normal and then when it gets to the simmering part I wack it in the slow cooker. Any cream etc gets left to the end as normal. Hope that helps!

I fry my spices and brown my meat and then slam it all in the slow cooker with toms, stock etc. Works a treat, meat lovely and tender, makes all my neighbours salivate with the smell.
Always experiment. Bung in some toasted almonds and coriander at the end.

I do the same as the others. Make loads of curry although not sure they'd pass the authenticity test.
Leave cream or coconut milk until the end though or it can split if simmering all day.

I do mine the lazy way, raw chicken frozen onion, curry paste and a tin of tomatoes straight in the slow cooker cook on low all day. Stir in creme freche before serving.

Yes, I do the same as other posters and I enjoy what I make but I'm really not sure if it would please a curry expert.

I think the slow cooker destroys the flavour of the spices, it reduces everything to a stew taste, you'll have to fix it at the end and then you've got to cook in the spices. I wouldn't again.

Same as the others. Cook spices in a pan, add onions, tinned tomatoes, meat and put in the slow cooker. Also add cream/coconut cream at the end, with fresh coriander.

curry paste or powder, tin of toms, chopped onion, meat and if i've got more time chutney, chopped apple, sultanas, maybe some lefover veg, stockpot. no pre cooking just chucked in pot and stirred once.

tastes fine....maybe not an expert curry but then they aren't going to be able to put that together in 5 mins in the morning.

Hmm I do batch cooking anyway. Just thought sc might make life slightly easier. But DH puts himself on par with masterchef so it has to taste good. I could always do the onions and meat in the sc and then put into saucepan at end to add the spices?

Ah but he works 50 odd hrs a wk. He does talk about giving it all up and opening a fine dining restaurant (his dream!) Smile
