Morning head, not sure what happened with your cake, i have a fab choc cake with i'm making today actually.

Grease 2 8inch tins.
Blend 50grms of cocoa powder with 6 tsp of boiling water to a paste, then in a bowl add all togther,3eggs,50mls of milk,175grms s/rflour,100grms butter,275grms caster sugar, mix till smooth, line and grease tins and cook for 25-30 mins on fan 160or gas 4 , thos is a lovely cake and never fails for me.

nannycook · 22/09/2013 07:25

Head, i missed put 1tsp of baking powder too. Try and see how you get on and let me know.

CreatureRetorts · 22/09/2013 07:27

Are you using self raising flour or plain plus baking powder?
I would use the latter instead.

sillyoldfool · 22/09/2013 07:48

Google delias all in one sponge and add some cocoa to it.
Get some fresh eggs, the fresher the eggs the lighter the cake.

Personally I'd try again another day to work out the problem. Pop out to Sainsburys-/Asda/Tesco etc. boys birthday cakes -£8. Done. No stress

There's a great chocolate cake recipe on the BBC good food website.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2303680/chocolate-owl-cake

It's actually surprisingly easy to make, but even if you don't want to decorate it as they suggest, the basic chocolate cake recipe is delicious. Good luck with your cake!

Is your oven wonky? baking powder out of date?
Are you creaming the fat and sugar until really fluffy before adding the other stuff?

headsspinningforachange · 22/09/2013 14:16

Nope not wonky & creaming everything as it should be done

Sandwich the two flat cakes together, and enjoy. They are going to taste yummy compared to the £5 value tesco ones you can get.
Enjoy!

Otherwise, room temp eggs and fat, and beat the fat and sugar til pale, add in eggs, then SR flour, cocoa and a teaspoon baking powder. Try a slightly smaller tin, it often makes cakes look like they haven't risen if the tin is too big.

tearoomtrash · 22/09/2013 14:52

Betty Crocker chocolate sponge mix. Never fails! Wink

IDismyname · 22/09/2013 14:54

I wonder if one of your ingredients is out of date. Flour has a very short shelf life, and if your baking powder is out of date, it won't work.

Hope you have something sorted by now!

Happy Db's birthday!

headsspinningforachange · 22/09/2013 15:21

Managed to sandwich them together I just put a bit extra filling in Grin

Thanks everybody
