OMG, vanilla ice cream is frozen custard- who knew?

Just bought a freezer bowl to make ice cream. Ploughed merrily into a plain vanilla recipe for an easy first go. Half way through I realised it was remarkably like making custard (the slow way not the Bird's Custard way) and now I'm eating said ice cream and instead of ooh'ing at delicious home made ice cream I'm sitting here thinking: I'M EATING FROZEN CUSTARD.

I knew. We had an ice-cream maker for a bit. It usually has to be churned as you freeze it or it sets like an ice pop.

Yes, I knew that. Only proper ice-cream is frozen custard though, most of the stuff in the shops is a nasty blend of cheap ingredients with thickener.

My grandmother used to make the most delicious vanilla ice-cream, I've never tasted anything that compared to it.

OK, feeling a bit silly... but very proud of my new no-nasty-blend ice cream :-) (And a bit full! DH is out, DC is alseep, I am busy 'sampling')

Custard ice creams are great but take a while to cool enough to put through the ice cream machine - I often make a quick ice cream with double cream and condensed milk, it's very rich and delicious. Shop bought ice creams are horrible things.
