How big is a cup cake?

I have what I consider to be ordinary sized bun tins for little cakes.

I also have some muffin tins which are larger and for - well muffins obviously!

I want to try this recipe Cupcake recipe which I think must be American. She refers to them as cup cakes but in the directions talks about using a muffin tray.

Thing is I am not entirely sure how a cup cake differs from a normal cake and whether when an American recipe says a muffin they mean the same as someone from the UK.

I thought I could make the mixture then try to guess by looking at it which sort of tray to use, however I want to buy some pretty paper cases specially so I need to guess which to buy.

What does anyone think? Big muffin or little cake?

5foot5, i have tins for cupcakes that had a lable bun tin/muffin on it, little cakes are fairy cakes and are tiny. I find those tins are ideal and you picture looks like the size i make.

Cupcakes are usually around 5cm across the bottom of the paper case, and just under 4cm high.

Thank you both.

It does sound like my "muffin" tins are the ones to go for then.

I guess I have usually been making fairy cakes in the past.
