DS has just started in Reception. He is having school lunches in an attempt to help him try new foods but he isn't actually eating very much at all. As a result, he is SO grumpy, tired and downright miserable at the end of the day and the walk home is tough going.

What can I give him for a quick, healthy, energy boost post school?

I have made some fruit muffins and flapjacks, but need some more inspiration please! Thanks

A small sandwich and piece of fruit is best IME.

Juice, pitta bread and peanut butter, chocolate brioche for a treat

Post school snack is always a banana here - easy to carry, easy to eat either walking or in car, energy rich and filling.

Pancakes(American style) stuffed with grated carrot and apple. Quicke, easy, filling, nutritious and a treat to boot

mug home made soup (butternut squash for example)
Nigella's sweetcorn fritters (very quick and easy)
home-made pancakes with apple compote

Although when dd was small and finding her school days long, I used to give her her proper supper as soon as we got home and then she just had her pudding while we were eating dinner. It wasn't until she was about 7yrs that she had an after-school snack then supper with us.

Oh sorry - just read op again - if you are looking for something portable then agree bananas are good or suggest something like home made tray bake with raisins and oats - energy boost but not too fast release.
