Organic jars are so sour

What to do , my 5 month dd wont eat the Hipp organic fruits I buy her. she ate them fine for a few weeks and now refuses. Is it possible her tastes buds have developed?? I have tried them myself and they are VERY SOUR. Before the sugar police scream at me, what can I add to sweeten them, so she takes it. Any other good fruit jars?? Apple, banana etc.

Any supermums out there tutting in disgrace, I do make her fresh vegs.

heinz pure fruit.

Funny because my kids like sour tastes (love plain yogurt, for instance). I thought all kids like sour if they haven't been inundated with sweet flavours. When I was a kid we used to pick & eat a wild weed that grew in our neighbourhood just to get the sour taste of it.

Don't give her fruit jars. Just give her the veggies.

Make her fruit yourself with ripe pears and apples - most babies love them. I think they often put lemon juice in fruit jars to stop them discolouring so they probably are quite sour.

If she is eating lots of veggies she doesnt need fruit so I wouldn't worry.

I havent been very well Enid , my mum had to help me do the vegs, I know SAAD, but I get in a state at them mo(due to a condition , on other threads). Oh well Ill give her carrot for lunch then.

try the baby organix ones - i'm not at all organic, but ds loved these (and refused everything I lovingly pureed for him - grr). They are actually tasty for adults too, which you can't often say about babyfood!

Enid · 16/02/2004 12:21

well its not the end of the world if you put a bit of sugar in it, but its pretty un-necessary.

Pureeing up loads of pear and apple doesnt take that long and will really make you feel like supermum though

If you want to give her puddings can you give her some plain fromage frais with a bit of banana mashed in? Can't remember whether you are 'supposed' to give dairy at this age though...

melsy · 16/02/2004 12:40

Yes I wondered that to Enid , you are very keen on the natural route. I like the banana in yogurt idea. I really dont like adding sugar, as I have a potential sugar problem & I would rather not give it to her.

Well I have just tried the pure fruits from heinz (i bought them the other day to try) and we have a NO GO!!! I mean how much plainer can I get!!!May be she doesnt like the apple taste. Were do I get baby organix???

maybe she is full?

SenoraPostrophe · 16/02/2004 12:42

If you add sugar, add raw cane sugar if you can - white sugar has all manner of nasty things in (they bleach it and add things to make it shiny).

Or make fresh!

Enid · 16/02/2004 12:44

Yes, maybe she just doesn't want it! I have to say I was quite relaxed about dd2's food but she wouldn't eat fruit from jars at all - she was a great big hungry lump so I used to give her veggies and then plain fromage frais (also with a slightly sharp taste) and she couldn't get enough of it!

She loves sweet things now of course but I didn't see the point when she was weeny and would quite happily go without.

if you are going to Waitrose anyway they also stock tiny pots of plain unsweetened fromage frais - they were Alices' favourite food at 5/6 months.

melsy · 17/02/2004 10:29

Well we had lift off last night, we mashed some banana with warm milk & hey presto me thinks she likes it. Maybe apples are just to sour. Think I will puree some pears & try. Yes will feel like supermum !!!

Yay, go melsy - I am afraid I always get lots of sad satisfaction out of my kids eating my home cooked food. x E

Pear is much milder tasting than apple in puree.

I did H (5 months) some mango puree last night and that went down very well!
