how to make roasted fox

(NB - not roadkill Smile)

For my sins, I have decided to throw a gruffalo themed party for DSs 2nd birthday. There'll be about 3 or 4, 2-3 year olds and 8-10 adults.
I've figured out how to do the scrambled snake, gruffalo cakes and mouse sandwiches.

Unfortunately, I've hit a bit of a block when it comes to the roasted Fox bit. I will not be taking DPs suggestion of carving frankenfurters to look like foxes. Any suggestions on how to achieve a roasted Fox party dish. I was thinking small hot dogs, sausage rolls or carrot sticks.

Also any suggestions re entertainment would be appreciated. I was just thinking of a bubble machine at the beginning and then a baby style cinema (cushions on the floor etc) and show the gruffalo and room on the broom.
I'm not really familiar with children's parties.

No owl ice cream?

enormouse · 17/09/2013 16:24

Blob of ice cream with eyes and a beak? Smile

Chicken drumsticks?

motherinferior · 17/09/2013 16:27

DD2 agrees with cocktail sausages 'with ketchup to look like loads of blood'.

Pootles2010 · 17/09/2013 16:29

Don't do much in terms of entertainment - they'll keep themselves relatively happy just pootling around. Maybe some balloons etc to play with?

Re roasted fox - I'd just roast chicken legs and put a label saying roasted fox tbh, but I'm a bit lazy!

Are you in the UK? There were quite a few Gruffalo and Gruffalo Child fancy dress costumes in Sainsbury's the other day (they went down to 2yo. I was sorely tempted!).

TwelveLeggedWalk · 17/09/2013 16:31

Oh and my 2yo would definitely vote for sausages and ketchup!

enormouse · 17/09/2013 16:35

That sounds good (and easy), motherinferior. Do parents expect anything healthy at kids parties or are they ok with just party food? Last year was just family and some adult friends, this is DSs first party with other kids.

Thanks twelvelegged I'm in the UK. I'll have to check that out.

www.partypieces.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=Gruffalo&queryFromSuggest=true&userInput=gruff I had this and a pin the green wart on the nose at dd's party.

Timeforabiscuit · 17/09/2013 16:36

Shish kebab type things? I always wonder what actually goes in them!

enormouse · 17/09/2013 16:37

I was thinking that pootles and just sticking on the dvd if they got too irritating/wound up.

Its not Gruffalo cake, it's Gruffalo crumble!

Flip, get your literacy references right!

:D

enormouse · 17/09/2013 16:40

Tis gruffalo cake in the gruffalos child. Smile. What the snake says the mouse is eating.

It's both isn't it? Down by the lake eating gruffalo cake from The Gruffalo's Child. Tummy rumble/ Gruffalo crumble from the original.

enormouse · 17/09/2013 16:45

Thanks for the link madcap. It looks cheaper than Amazon.

I'd say chicken drumsticks too, perhaps dusted with some paprika for the orangey-red colour? (not the hot stuff, lol)

Great party theme idea, btw Smile

DuelingFanjo · 17/09/2013 19:26

I have seen
Elle use wot sits, carrot sticks or twiglets.

DuelingFanjo · 17/09/2013 19:27

That should be 'people use wotsits'
If you go on pinterest and search gruffalo food or gruffalo party loads of stuff comes up.

TerrorMeSue · 17/09/2013 19:31

Make sure to serve some plain food that children will recognise as 'normal' too. At this age some won't eat stuff they don't recognise. Dd went to a similar thing recently and wouldn't touch the sadnwiches and cakes with faces on as they freaked her out a bit. A couple of bowls of grapes and cherry tomatoes and maybe carrot sticks or cucumber batons are good for young children I find.

blackteaplease · 17/09/2013 20:07

Have you seen the Jane Asher Gruffalo cake? I did this for dd's 3rd birthday and it went down a treat cake recipe

enormouse · 17/09/2013 21:31

All great ideas, thank you Smile

blacktea that is a fantastic looking cake but I don't have the skill to do it. I'm allergic to eggs so I've never really bothered learning to bake cakes (I can cook though).
I was thinking of buying chocolate cupcakes and decorating them to look like gruffalos. This sort of thing - www.flickr.com/photos/27185893@N07/8116992242/
