DS2 is 5 and will not eat potatoes of any kind including chips. He doesn't like rice but does like pasta. I am loathed to cook something different for him as I already do 5.30 meal for DSs and 8.30 meal for me and DH. I sometimes give him bread and butter, or he just gets the meat and veg. I really dont want to cook pasta every day. Any ideas please to help keep the balance in his diet? TIA

Have you tried polenta or couscous, or even dumplings (kind of bready)? Will he not eat potato even if mixed into something like a hotpot or cheesy mash on a cottage pie? Is it just plain rice or would he eat something a bit moister like risotto? Just wondering if it is texture or taste he doesn't like.
Very tricky. My DS is still only 18mo and eats everything so I'm not looking forward to this stage!

Thanks. I like couscous so will get him to try mine. Dumplings would go down well with DS1 and DH, so that could be a winner all round!

Don't cook anything different just dish up what you have and if he doesn't eat it so be it but the more you panda to him not eating what the rest of you eat the less he will ever eat the same as everyone else.

What about carby veg? Things like sweetcorn or baked beans? Noodles? My dc find them quite entertaining for some reason Confused

I wouldn't worry too much, we generally eat too many carbs in this country. Having just meat and veg sometimes or giving him bread and butter to go with a meal is just fine.

the veg count as carbs too

My DS was like this, I sometimes gave him bread with meals but mostly I just stuck to the meat and veg as these are the important bits. No one ever suffered nutritionally from not eating potato

My dd is just like this. She eats only pasta as her main starch, but I don't give it everyday. There are plenty of carbs in fruit and veg that aren't advertised as much (apples, peas, sweetcorn, etc) and I refuse to stress that she won't eat the stuff we all try to avoid as adultsGrin
Sometimes she eats dinner with the family properly. Other days she eats bits of meat and veg and a bit of fruit. I offer what's on the menu, and nowt else. Though I should of confess that we have pasta on the menu more than we ever did pre ddGrin
(she now eats rice as of today- after Weeks of giving a different pasta shape when serving pasta, I've convinced her that rice is straight pasta, like the orzo we had last week- sneaky I know, but damn it, dd1 wanted rice for a change and I didn't think dd2 would believe it when I said it!)

I would just give him more veg if he will eat it. As in a bigger portion of whatever you are doing already.

Oatcakes are good too. Just check out the salt content. If one of our dc doesn't like an element of their meal I will often give a couple of oatcakes with either hummous or cheese on top.

I am not a potato lover at all and we rarely have potatoes. I am not a rice fan either and when DH has rice which he loves I have an alternative dinner or have bread with my meal. A nice crusty french stick, ciabatta roll or pitta bread is always good or wraps which can work well when something is in a sauce like curry. Sometimes when I make pasta I make extra also and the next day I have it as pasta salad as my carb as it always tasted fine the next day too. If it's a bit dry I add some mayo. A new one I do too but higher in salt is serve my meal on a bed of nachos which is great with mince dishes or stir fries. Cous cous takes only seconds to make up and minutes to cook. Would he eat more beans or pulses?

So it's not that he "won't eat carbs", he just doesn't like potatoes or rice, is that it?

Just give him more veg then, or some bread as you are doing. I can't see much of a problem.
