How do you do yours? I have never made this before but am going to give it a go.

  • I was recommended pork shoulder, how much do I need to buy for two people?
  • I have a squeezy bbq sauce I can use or do you have a omemade recipe you follow?
  • How do you cook it? I don't have a slow cooker just conventional and fan oven.

No advice OP, I'd love to do this too and I'm without a slow cooker so I'm placemarking bumping for you.

Funny you should ask, I was just asking my amazing cook of a friend for her recipe as I'm planning to do it for my boy's birthday party (he's 1 so it'll be mostly grown ups, and too rainy for a bbq). This is her recipe:

Get massive slab of pork shoulder, leave fat on and rub whole joint it with stuff (salt, pepper, dried chillis or chilli paste, paprika, cumin, oregano etc). Leave it for a bit
Brown it on all sides (by brown I mean char that mofo) in a massive pot
Take meat out of massive pot and deglaze it wih some balsamic or similar
Now you want a bit of liquid so it doesn?t dry out but not much cos you don?t want it to stew. You?re after a mix of sweet, sour and spicy so I chuck in a little bit f orange juice (the one I use has lime in as well) a little bit of ketchup, some sort of chilli paste (tesco have a nice chipotle one). Splash in a little bit of water. You want like an inch of liquid max in the pot
Dump the meat back in the pot fat side up, chuck in some bay leaves and cover it with lid or foil and stick it in the over on a low heat (gas mark 4 max) for as long as poss, 4 hours minimum.
Stick a fork in in every so often so see when it?s falling apart properly and make sure it?s not gonna dry out ? you can always add a couple of tablespoons of water
When it?s ready to come out take lid off and put oven higher to give a little bit of a crust for maybe 15 mins or so
Then just jab at it with two forks or your hands til it all falls apart.

I just put salt and pepper on a shoulder joint (I just ask the butcher's counter in Asda to do one for 4/5/however many...) , stuff it into the slow cooker and leave on low for 6 hours - then pull apart with forks, smother in Paul Newman's BBQ sauce , heat through for 15 min on high...

I use the slow cooker - but you can just put it in your oven on 200 for 20 min - gets the heat started, then turn it down to its lowest setting 60/80/S whatever it is and leave it for at least 4 hours.. then pull apart, smother, heat through and eat...

MadOfStarDust do I add water if I am cooking in the oven?

mmmm - I wouldn't , but I know some people like to make their own sauce who do.... My sister puts her roasting joint on a trivet/rack thing and puts a cup of water in the tray - then she uses the water and juices to make her BBQ sauce with (not as nice as Paul Newman's!)

I just cover the joint - foil/lid whatever and it cooks in it's own juices
