Alternatives to Yeo Valley/Rachels yoghurts for a 2 year old?

Seem to be spending a fortune on yoghurts and since being informed of the sugar content in Petit Filu by a dentist friend am reluctant to buy them.

Making my own is not an option. Help!

Big pots and serve a tablespoon in a bowl?

Wallison · 09/09/2013 13:17

I just get big tubs of supermarket own brand natural Greek yoghurt and spoon it into a bowl. My mother is horrified that my son thinks unsweetened yoghurt is a treat!

Any supermarket own brand would be fine wouldnt it? Sure even aldo would do their own natural yogurt.

dreamingofsun · 09/09/2013 13:29

why is making your own not an option. its very easy. buy lakeland yogurt maker, following tips from here. then you can add fruit to it once its done.

I get supermarket own natural and the kids can add honey or soft fruit or whatever if they want to.

I don't let either of them add honey themselves. I did once and regretted it Grin

There was a bit of a battle about this at first as they wanted their own little pots and liked choosing which flavour. But we are now almost there.

Why not just use Yeo Valley/Rachels? They are perfectly suitable for small children (in fact, because of the production process, my understanding is that they are okay from weaning on, unlike cow's milk which shouldn't be introduced till 12 months - DS was on Yeo Valley from about 7 months). I tried a bit of Petit Filou when DS was little and it went on my banned list there and then because it was so artificially sweet tasting I was worried I'd never get any real food into him if he got a taste for them (disclaimer lest I sound insufferably smug - he's now 5 1/2 and would live on Haribo if he got his way - the "I don't like that" phase of fussiness kicked in at about 18/20 months as it tends to with most children and hasn't gone yet - I have hopes that it may ease sometime round the age of 18 years).

Been there, done that with the add your own honey scenario - it becomes a case of "would you like a smidgeon of yoghurt with your honey?"

Thanks for all the suggestions. Buying the bigger pots and decanting could be the best option for me.

Lurcio - I have bought Yeo Valley/Rachels for over 7 years (DD has them as well) but was looking for a cheaper option!

cheaper = making your own. a litre £1.30 ie £0.50 for one pot of yogurt, and £0.85 for the milk. i still don't understand why you can't do your own?
