breakfast alternative to porridge that doesn't contain milk

Is there anything warm I could replace it with?

By the time I seem to have sorted out my daughter (12 weeks!) in the morning I am not getting downstairs for breakfast till about 10.30ish and I'm starving. Porridge seems to fill me up ready for the day in a way that toast doesn't. I want to see if cutting out milk will reduce my daughter's vomiting, so need some ideas for a substantial breakfast that will set me up for the day without the milk. Would prefer warm now that the weather is feeling colder.

Any ideas? The only easy thing I can think off is to have lunch type food like soup but that doesn't appeal much for my first meal of the day...

You can make porridge with water

BoundandRebound · 08/09/2013 21:25

In fact I do by preference

HerrenaHarridan · 08/09/2013 21:25

You could make porridge with water, soya milk, almond milk etc

HazeltheMcWitch · 08/09/2013 21:25

You can make porridge with water, rather than milk - worth a try?

Or, you could try bircher muesli, where you soak the oats overnight - try in apple juice; then the next day you'd normally add fruits, nuts, seeds etc and yogurt to the mix, but it'd still be lonely with no yoghurt added.

HazeltheMcWitch · 08/09/2013 21:26

(slow cross post. And the muesli would be lovely not lonely Blush )

Another vote for porridge with water, much nicer (less cloying and gluey).

Miggs28 · 08/09/2013 21:27

I was just going to say you can make porridge with water, it's not quite as creamy but not its not awful.

LouBeee · 08/09/2013 21:29

I stopped eating porridge a while ago as it left me hungry and was trying to give up milk. I do now eat things like soup or leftovers (and try to see it as Meal 1 rather than breakfast) and am amazed at how much energy I have/much less inclined to snack.

My favourite is this paleopot.com/2012/02/hungry-man-sweet-potato-casserole/
I make it on a Sunday night and it does me the whole week

Takver · 08/09/2013 21:29

DH eats cereal with juice - muesli with hot apple juice would be nice.

bundaberg · 08/09/2013 21:31

make it with water, or use oat/almond milk

MacaYoniandCheese · 08/09/2013 21:32

Make porridge with water! I used to be a die-hard lacto-porridgista but have now converted. Top it with a blob of peanut or almond butter and some fruit. Yummeth.

StuckOnARollercoaster · 08/09/2013 21:44

ooh - I didn't realise that it could be done with water!!! will try that tomorrow.
Thanks for the other ideas - never thought of hot apple juice with muesli, or using an almond milk.
Maybe I should try a soup as a breakfast anyway...

Oh yes, miso soup! Oddly good. Sort of borderline revolting Grin

Clearspring do a good brown rice miso paste.

hallamoo · 08/09/2013 21:49

I started making my porridge with oatly oat milk when I gave up dairy after I had DS. I prefer it now, can't bear the smell of porridge made with cows milk now!

NationMcKinley · 08/09/2013 21:50

I make porridge with oat milk as I really dislike cows milk. I also add dried fruit, desiccated coconut, seeds and berries. I generally shovel this down while making packed lunches and fielding DS1&2s continuous bloody arguments Fills me up for ages Grin

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2013 21:59

I really like porridge made with almond milk, so buy it for that even though I can have cow milk

PicklePants · 08/09/2013 22:01

What about pearl barley? If you have a slow cooker you can get it ready the night before. Google 'pearl barley breakfast recipes' - there are a few that don't use milk.

I should make it clear that I haven't tried any of these recipes myself (as my slow cooker is knackered and I'm not organised enough to do it the old fashioned way!) but I think it would be quite filling in a similar way to porridge.

NotGoodNotBad · 08/09/2013 22:23

Porridge with water is like wallpaper paste! Don't do it!

melliebobs · 08/09/2013 22:32

Decent breakfasts that are quick n fill you up?

Beans on toast
Omelette
Poached/scrambled eggs on toast
Mackerel on toast
Breakfast quesadillas
Grilled bacon butty
Grilled sausage butty
Or if you still want porridge make it with rice milk/soya/almond milk etc

Bumbez · 08/09/2013 22:38

Some good suggestions I'd like to add quinoa with sliced banana is quite nice.

sashh · 09/09/2013 08:34

Another vote for porridge with water.

Kwgeree - batch make and freeze in small pots - throw one in the microwave.

Ham, bread and boiled egg (boil the night before) tomatoes etc - like may European countries do.

omelet / scrambled eggs

fresh fruit and nuts

beans on toast (microwave the beans in a jug)

Egg in a basket

Can you tell I come from a family with a few lactose intolerant people?

nilbyname · 09/09/2013 08:38

I have 2 eggs scrambled, and a slice of either salmon, bacon, ham, or feta. Then I have as all handful of almonds and a peppermint tea. 2 glasses of water.

cloudskitchen · 09/09/2013 09:29

I know you said no to toast but how about 2 bits of granary with some ham sandwiched in the middle. A favourite in my house. The protein in the ham should help you stay fuller longer.

Cantdothisagain · 09/09/2013 09:46

Granola muffins or granola bars are great.

StuckOnARollercoaster · 09/09/2013 10:48

Thanks for the extra ideas...

Well just finishing my porridge with water - its ok but am not very keen for it every day like i do now, but I have some other nice ideas to try.. will see if my local co-op has almond milk. Like the idea of beans on toast, hot apple juice with granola/muesli or maybe on days where I have a bit of time I can cook myself some eggs...
