hi fellow lentils

why do the beans that i put 7in 8to soak*9 always go frilly at the edges0 in about 2 hours?
why do they always trun to mush after the pre soak and cooking, however slowly i simmer them etc?

(chick peas ok, )
sorry re typing- unhelpful 2yr old!!

are you refering to chickpeas?
I've never heard of them going frilly, the skins detaching yes, but not frilly.
It is best to cook them at a rolling boil for a shorter time than slow simmering

And I believe the jury is out as to whether it is more economical and energy efficient to buy good canned ones rather than cook one's own

nope, chick peas are good, and i like them more than the timmed, so am happy to soak and boil these.

It is the kidney beans and the haricot beans i soaked yesterday- not hapy with it at all.

I've been soaking and boiling and then freezing in different sized portions- ie a 1 toddler size and then a 2 adult sized bag so i recon is it a bit easier than having to use the whole tin for a toddler meal...
interested to hear that tins may be much the same- though they take up a load more space and really hurt if you drop them on your toes Smile

Hmmmm.... interesting
have you tried Pinot beans, the ones used for Mexican re-fried beans they hold their shape well and the skin doesn't come off.

I love beans, I could keep this thread going for days

wrinkly beans could be old - dried beans do suprisingly have a sell-by date.
Another bean lover here.

am cooking them now- chilli for tea!
