"Breakfast is boring".... need some inspiration

Okay, I have three kids aged 5, 3 and 1 and none of them eat breakfast - no matter what I give them!! They are all brilliant eaters at other mealtimes and are not fussy at all. However, trying to get anything down them at 7am is an almighty challenge to say the least.

Does anyone have any ideas for quick, easy, healthy but mega tasty breakfasts that I can serve up to them? Getting three under-6s out of the house by 8.15am is a military procedure so I can't cook anything too elaborate but I willing to do some prep the night before if it means they'll leave the house with a full stomach.

I have tried porridge, toast (with an assortment of toppings), scrambled eggs, brioche, croissants, and every cereal under the sun..... They even got bored of bloody Coco Pops after one day.... what child gets bored of chocolate?

TIA

Scotch pancakes?
Sandwiches?

CaptainSweatPants · 03/09/2013 10:51

My 7 year old eats one weetabix everyday

My 9 year old ears a bowl of cheerios everyday

No way do I have time to be scrambling eggs

Have you tried just offering toast & leaving them to it

BlueChampagne · 03/09/2013 14:38

Jam or honey sandwiches are usually a winner, but generally I'm with CaptainSweatPants

AFishWithoutABicycle · 03/09/2013 14:53

Pancakes with bananas and Nutella (for a special
Occasion)

Porridge with raisins in a little face design or spelling out their name.
Banana cut down the middle filled with yogurt and decorated with raisins or blueberries. (Like a banana split)
Fruit skewers.
Boiled eggs in special cups or with hats on.

Think I'm with captain on this. In the holidays and the weekends we try to do a bit more, like full English or blueberry pancakes but in the week it tends to be ready brek with whatever fruit they fancy, toast with the topping of their choice (but only things like nut butter, lemon curd or jam) or sometimes they ask for a fruit salad, which means they have to chip it themselves...Smile

How about a shake? You could add banana and berries to the milk and whizz it up?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/09/2013 16:19

There are a couple of recipes here too and don't forget god old eggy bread Smile

BushCricket · 03/09/2013 16:27

One of mine eats about 3 breakfasts in one sitting and the other barely anything. She will go for milkhsakes made with yoghurt and ripe bananas or frozen berries (and a bit of sugar for the berry ones.)

usualsuspect · 03/09/2013 16:33

Muffins? There are some healthy type ones.

TheArmadillo · 03/09/2013 16:37

Mine have continental type breakfast.

Toast/roll/oatcakes with butter
Yoghurt
Cheese
Salami/chorizo/ham
Fruit (always banana and apple for dd, ds has whatever is in season)

Dd sometimes has oatcakes with peanut butter and a chopped banana on the side as a change.

Jins · 03/09/2013 16:44

Mine were never great breakfast fans and have now stopped eating breakfast altogether. I can't say much as they are both well over 16 and I've never eaten breakfast either.

When we used to insist we seemed to have most success with bagels topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon or ham. Toast if no bagels.

Some people just can't face food at 7am. Sad

Cantdothisagain · 03/09/2013 17:32

I make a low sugar banana flapjack. Keeps well and goes down well.

Also make banana muffins...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/09/2013 17:34

Some people just can't face food at 7am.

Do agree with that jins. I'm the other way, I eat at least 2 breakfast by 9.30 and usually have another snack before my lunch but I can't face food late in the evening.

PicklePants · 03/09/2013 17:46

I make sugar-free muffins (google 'fruitburst muffins', it's a BBC Good Food recipe) and freeze them. Take one out the night before, or pop in the microwave to defrost. DS loves them - he's a hungry thing so he also has plain yoghurt, berries and some honey.

Also banana milkshakes, French toast, and sometimes, on really busy days, those toaster waffles that have so many preservatives in they keep for about 3 years Blush

RainbowBob · 03/09/2013 20:00

Blimey - you lot are stars. Thank you all for your excellent suggestions. Just about to do an online supermarket shop so will be getting ingredients for muffins, shakes and flapjacks plus some ham/cheese etc. Think I had just got stuck in a bit of a rut and had just assumed breakfast was for cereal, toast and eggs but actually the kids are bored stiff with it. It had not even occurred to me to give convention the heave-ho and actually give them something.... like a sandwich!

Jins and Jilted - totally agree, 7am is just way to early to be eating food and during the holidays I have been feeding them at 9ish. But now school is starting I need to at least try to get them to eat early.

Captain - tried the toast.... in fact, that has been my Number One Breakfast Option for the last year. They are so fed up with it most of the toast ends up on the floor.

Anyway, I now have plenty to be getting on with.... thank you!

My DS is totally obsessed with those reusable toaster pockets. Everything is getting toasted here Smile

Andcake · 03/09/2013 20:37

Just thought id add this recipe littlegrazers.com/oatmeal-carrot-and-raisin-cookies/#.UiT2lsu9KSO saw it yesterday when looking for blw ideas. Haven't tried it yet!

FrankSpenser · 04/09/2013 09:57

Scotch pancakes
Cereal bars
Egg waffles
Brekfast Muffins
Croissents

mrspink27 · 04/09/2013 10:26

Cheese on toast, baked beans? pitta bread and cheese/ham, crumpets, bagels, english muffins, wraps, waffles, scotch pancakes, croissant, pain au chocolat, brioche, toasted sandwich - egg'cheese/ham
Nigella has a recipe for breakfast bars which are seedy, nutty, fruity things... could try a cereal/flapjack (homemade to reduce too much processed stuff)
We also have hardboiled or softboiled eggs, scrambled, omelette, poached.
Yoghurt with fruit or honey, porridge.

mrspink27 · 04/09/2013 10:53

Smoothies also... have you checked out pinterest? pinterest

JiltedJohnsJulie · 04/09/2013 21:10

How was breakfast today rainbow?

HRHLadyG · 04/09/2013 21:13

Big mix of chopped fruit....banana, dried apricots, raisins, apple, pear, plum, melon, handful of muesli/cereal, big dollop of yoghurt, squidge of honey, few nuts.... x

RainbowBob · 05/09/2013 10:50

Okay, so yesterday morning (Wednesday) the cupboards were almost bare so I gave them toast and scrambled eggs which went down like a lead balloon.

However, once my grocery shopping arrived - complete with ingredients for new-style scrumptious breakfasts - there was no stopping me. I got the oldest DCs to help me make some of those fruitburst muffins. They had them for breakfast this morning and the oldest two loved them, practically licked plates clean. Youngest DC, however, barely touched them! However, two out of three ain't bad and it's a massive improvement on none of them eating.

Tomorrow I am going to try croissants with melted ham and cheese inside. Have bought some ready-grated cheese to save time and will stick in microwave to melt.

Thanks mrspink for the pinterest suggestion... I am actually on Pinterest but it never occurred to me to use it for kids' brekky recipes... I am now on to that one big style.

And thank you everyone else for your ideas, which I will be trying out over the next few weeks. I will keep you all updated on my progress.

Pinterest is my new thing RainbowBob. It's rapidly becoming my "go to" for an awful lot far too much time on my hands obviously

LovingKent · 05/09/2013 13:56

Hmm a lot of ours are toast based but will list any in case you haven't tried already.

We eat:-

Porridge with frozen raspberries (quick defrost in microwave) / lemon curd / jam / honey / fruit compote / cinnamon
Granola (homemade, recipe here
Egg - scrambled, fried, boiled
Eggy bread
Cheese on toast
Beans on toast
Fruit salad and yoghurt / fruit and yoghurt

When we have more time:-
Pancakes
Drop scones
Cornbread, bacon and beans

Got a lot of my ideas from here. If you pick the kid friendly / quick and easy ones they don't take long. Like the sound of those fruit burst muffins - will be giving them a go.

AnyoneButLulu · 05/09/2013 14:36

I bake a big bowl of fruit crumble (with loads of oats in the topping) on a Sunday night and each morning I microwave a bowl and serve with cream.
