What is the difference? I always just use SR. Am I missing a trick?!

SR flour has raising agent in it, plain doesn't.

Sorry, half asleep. I always just use SR too. Occasionally if trying.a new recipe I'll do plain with baking powder but usually end up back with SR.

Self-raising flour ends up tasting more salty. But I use self raising myself as it's simpler. Write away for a fabulous Bero baking cookbook. Still making them after all these years.

I always use plain flour with baking powder simply because plain flour has more uses and I cant be bothered to buy both on a regular basis. SR you can only use for cakes but plain for pastry, biscuits etc.

Not so, bakingaddict - s/raising flour has many uses:

Pancakes - you only need to add water
Soda bread - just add water and salt (optional)
Cakes - as you've already said

Like you I can't be bothered with buying both plain and s/r, so I just have s/r

I have a post on my blog with what you can make with just flour and water:
