Has anyone used Value brand flours?

Flour is so cheap, I usually stick to a known pride or the shop's own premium brand... however I was noticing today, Tesco's premimum brand is £1.17 and it's Value brand is 40p. That's a big difference!

Has anyone used the value flour? I keep thinking... well, it's just flour - it must be ok... I use it to make cakes, scones, thicken sauces etc.

Any advice?

I can't tell the difference TBH.

And I don't even sieve....but I think that might be the difference...I suspect you should sieve cheaper flours.

I always use the value brand, don't really do much baking, the odd cake here and there, or Yorkshire puddings, also use in sauces and always been ok, although I've never used a more expensive brand, so don't have anything to compare to!

All the time. Flour is flour isn't it?

YoniBottsBumgina · 24/08/2013 19:48

Value butter is the nicest butter too, IMO

chickensaladagain · 24/08/2013 19:56

I always use value basics like flour, butter & rice

Flour is flour and I do bake a lot

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2013 19:59

Value flour is absolutely fine. When I was on ML I made all our bread with it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/08/2013 20:14

Never used it but I use value butter in all baking. Have often pondered value flour.

OddBoots · 24/08/2013 20:16

It seems exactly the same to me.

DragonsAreReal · 24/08/2013 20:18

I bake loads and always use it.

Rummikub · 24/08/2013 20:19

Just bought value butter and it was fine. Wondering about getting the flour now too. I decided to try the value butter for baking as figured that manufacturers probably don't use premium/ branded ingredients.

ProfYaffle · 24/08/2013 20:20

I always use value flour and butter.

babsmam · 24/08/2013 20:34

Apparently it's something to do with how many times it has been sieved during milling that make value flour different. I was told this a couple of weeks ago by a friend. The premium stuff is sieved 3 times apparently and the lower price points less sieving. Happy to be wrong though.

FWIW I use as many baking basic range as I can and its all fine (aldi and sains, sometimes asda)

Shinyshoes1 · 24/08/2013 20:36

I have always used value sr flour and plain flour it's fine

I bake a lot

Rummikub · 24/08/2013 21:25

The main thing I'm bothered about are additives. Can deal with I sifted flour. Will buy some next time, esp as my dd seems to like baking a lot at the moment.

Rummikub · 24/08/2013 21:25

Unsifted I mean!

mumofapirate · 24/08/2013 21:27

I use it and ive never ever noticed any difference at all and I bake alot

LottieJenkins · 24/08/2013 21:39

I always use Value Flour!! Smile

Venay · 25/08/2013 08:46

Thanks everyone - at least we know that some people use it and are pleased with the result.

I think I will buy a bag and make a batch of cupcakes with the value flour, and one with the premium brand - keeping all the other ingredients the same. Then we can have blind taste testing - just like the Pepsi Challenge....

Showing my age no! Confused

I use value for pastry and sauces but would only use Sainsburys supreme flour for sponges. I buy my bread flour from Lidl, much cheaper than Tesco and Sainsburys etc and I've turned out a lovely loaf each time.

YoniBottsBumgina · 25/08/2013 12:41

They have to say if it has additives in. You tend to find more additives in the higher brands anyway for some reason Confused

Rummikub · 25/08/2013 13:30

That's interesting yoni. I will check ingredients lists now.

Yonihadtoask · 25/08/2013 13:34

I always buy the Value ranges. Seems to work fine.

It'll soon be time to get supplies in for the many Christmas cakes I will have to make - Cheapo flour, butter, and all the dried fruit will be the cheap ranges.
