Defrosting Mince

Beccarollover · 12/02/2004 14:03

I want to use some mince tonight but forgot to take out of the freezer - is it safe to defrost in microwave or shall I go and buy some?

TIA

If you take it out now and leave in kitchen will it not defrost by the time you want to use it? You could try breaking it up into small bits too as that seems to help quicken the process.

I am rubbish at using the defrost on my microwave so can't help there.

Northerner · 12/02/2004 14:07

It's OK in the microwave.

CountessDracula · 12/02/2004 14:08

Nuke it

I need to find my glasses I thought the title said Defrosting Mice.

carla · 12/02/2004 14:09

If it's still in it's plastic container, could you float it about in lukewarm water? I'm hopeless at defrost in my microwave too - always end up with some completely cooked and some completely frozen still.

Northerner · 12/02/2004 14:26

when defrosting in the microwave if you wrap kitchen roll around the edges this prevents them from being cooked and defrosts more evenly.

Beccarollover · 12/02/2004 14:27

great thanks

how long should it take in mic>?

Cook it from frozen - I do when I forget to take it out - just do it ona low heat and keep breaking it down!!

Also cook joints of beef from frozen - they tend to stay moister (yuck hate that word!!).

And ask SB34 - she thinks I am a domestic goddess - wouldn't go that far but never poisoned anyone just yet!! (although have tried to poison x2b a few times!!)

Northerner · 12/02/2004 14:36

Just put it on for a few minutes at a time and keep checking on it. The edges will defrost sooner so remove them when they are done, and just put the middle bit back in. IYSWIM.

My mocrowave has a defrost function which means I just set the weight of the meat and it sets the timer for me.
250g usuaally talkes about 15-20 mins

lou33 · 12/02/2004 15:20

I always defrost mine in the microwave, I am useless at planning ahead! My machine defrists by weight, so if yours is the same, and you tap in theproper weight, it should leave it slightly frozen in the centre. If you want it completely defrosted add another 100g.

Demented · 12/02/2004 15:34

LOL, I read this as "Defrosting Mice"!

Nothing more constructive to add!

noddy5 · 12/02/2004 15:36

you can cook it slowly from frozen

Thomcat · 12/02/2004 15:48

I could never nuke meat in the microwave - makes my tummy go all funny thinking about it, ohhh no I just couldn't! If it was me I'd get a curry tonight and use the mince tomorrow! And cooking it from frozen! I'm not saying you can't I just couldn't!!! Ohhh, why am I the only one thinking like that and being freaked out by frozen meat and microwaves - I must be weird!!

SoupDragon · 12/02/2004 15:53

I defrost mince in the microwave, stopping it frequently to break the mince up from the big lump so that bits of it don't cook.

I'm not sure I could use it from frozen though...

lou33 · 12/02/2004 16:00

You could always put the mince into tepid water to help it defrost if you don't like to use the microwave.

Oakmaiden · 12/02/2004 19:06

mince beef is fine cooked from frozen. Wouldn't try it with chicken or pork though....

Beccarollover · 12/02/2004 19:09

Well - only time will tell!

We have just eaten spaghettie bolognaise ala frozen mince!!

I just did it from frozen cooking it very slowly

Fingers crossed!
