Alternative to Lea & Perrins for a vegetarian?

I'm not veggie but inching towards it and have managed to make a lovely chilli that is veggie bar the generous slosh of L&P that I chuck in.

Is there a veggie equivalent or brand of this? It's so useful for giving a nice dark rich taste without meat/meat stock cubes!

I would like to be able to serve this to vegetarian friends, so this final tweak required.

Holland and Barrett used to do a version but I haven't bought it in a while. Reminds me that I should get some in!

YES there is something called Henderson's relish, which is very similar, and says its vegan/vegetarian.

I only know of its existence because some friends posted me some as a joke (long story..) and amazingly a large glass bottle of incredibly messy brown gloop made it through the post in a virtually unpadded bag unscathed!

Balsamic vinegar goes well in chilli, or perhaps brown sauce. I think it is the acidity you probably like. A square of high cocoa percentage dark chocolate or some ordinary cocoa is really good to mix in too.

Thanks for the suggestions. You might be right actually daftdame about it being the acidity. Yes I like addinga tsp of cocoa powder, it gives it a lovely silky appearance and good colour.

These Laura Santini tubes are great. Waitrose/Ocado/Sainsbury's stock them. I use the original but it has anchovies in. This is the SE Asian variety that is vegetarian.

A good Umami taste will come from Balsamic, Marmite, L+P, dried mushrooms, Mushroom sauce, Daddies. Ant combination of these will add flavour.

The best base for chile and pasta sauce however is the good old fashioned Italian soffrito. Fine dice a stick of celery an onion and a carrot. Fry in oil until soft and rich. Scale up the amounts obviously for larger dishes. I then add the garlic, seasoning and any dried or fresh herbs bar basil, wine and cook down. Meat is separately fried if using then added juices and all and cooked slowly for two or more hours adding wine as necessary.

With Quorn I dry fry it with a squeeze of Taste No#/La Bomba to get some textural crunch into it then add to the sauce and simmer.

mushroom ketchup You slosh in a spoonful as you would l&p

teabagpleb · 15/08/2013 09:46

Hendersons Relish. The bottle even looks similar. I think it's just mushroom ketchup with spices, so essentially L+P minus anchovies.

Heinz is vegan and usually for sale in home bargains and B&M for about 59p and tastes just as good Smile

Mrchip · 15/08/2013 20:05

Another vote for Henderson's Relish

McPrice · 15/08/2013 21:35

def try mushroom ketchup.

Creosote · 15/08/2013 21:38

Another one for mushroom ketchup. Yum!

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 16/08/2013 12:02

Waitrose does a vegetarian worcestershire sauce.

BlueMonday17 · 16/08/2013 23:03

Another vote for Henderson's Relish, it's fab in a veggie chilli. It's a Sheffield institution, Veggie Society-approved and it is so much better than mushroom ketchup. If you're not oop north you can buy it online here.

ShatnersBassoon · 16/08/2013 23:08

Yy to Henderson's Relish. I use it because it tastes nicer than worcester sauce, I'm not vegetarian. You can get Henderson's Relish crisps too, which are amazingly tasty.

MrsCosmopilite · 16/08/2013 23:12

I use Life 'free from..' Worcestershire Sauce (get it in Waitrose). I also use Mushroom Ketchup, or Balsamic Vinegar - or all three!

ravenAK · 16/08/2013 23:15

Henderson's Relish. Yum.

Mushroom soy sauce (in big bottles from Chinese food stores) is also good for giving a boost to any 'meaty' vegetarian dish. Very salty though.

RubyGoat · 16/08/2013 23:25

Try Biona Worcester sauce. I used to use this when I was vegetarian, am edging back towards it myself, especially as DD seems largely uninterested in meat (good girl!) I only started eating meat again as DH is a total carnivore. Maybe we can convert DH... miracles can happen!

Charleymouse · 16/08/2013 23:26

Hendersons relish. Yum If you want some I am in Sheffield and can post you some.

moonbells · 16/08/2013 23:29

Another vote for Henderson's. I have to stock up periodically when I go home to see my parents!

mrspink27 · 17/08/2013 10:36

marmite or a teaspoon of bouillon powder

mrspink27 · 17/08/2013 10:36

and a couple of squares of very dark chocolate.
