Bored with making packed lunches, help me please

4 years of making a packed lunch of some description. I've hit another brick wall.

Tomorrows contains:
2 x cocktai sausages
1 mini scotch egg
1 mini sausage roll
an egg cup full of penne pasts with tuna mayo
some bits of cheddar cheese
slices of cucumber
a cracker
some grapes

a yoghurt
a pot of peach pieces (fruitini things)

Today was:

  • steamed bits of baby corn, carrots, green beans and some cucumber with a dip
  • cheddar cheese & marmite sandwihes on brown bread cut into heart and star shapes
  • grapes

a yoghurt
a piece of homemade banana cake

That's the sort of thing she has.

It's an ok lunch but I'm bored for me, bored for hr. Need some new ideas.

Other things I do a lot are:

  • bits of cold pizza
  • cold home made chicken nuggets
  • cream cheese and bredstick dips

What else is there to offer?

Brick wall staring at me, help.

moondog · 13/06/2006 22:39

Eg cup sounds so sweet. Smile
I like cooking a lot,but hell,I couldn't be arsed putting al lthat together.
No wonder you're knackered.
Have you tried a rolling menu (like they do in most schools) so you just do the same thing every 2 weeks say?
Alternatively....school lunch?

Thomcat · 13/06/2006 22:40

I sometimes do cous cous or bulgar wheat for mine (knowing that someone else will sweep up Grin and my ds loves crackers with butter or philly. It is hard, though, to keep coming up with new ideas.

Lact8 · 13/06/2006 22:44

OMG! And you gwet that ready every morning?!?

How long does she have for lunch to eat all of that? My ds1 would take 2 hours he can't manage to finish a whole sandwich each day

moondog · 13/06/2006 22:45

If I did do a packed lunch,it would be a sandwich, drink and piece of fruit.
That's it. Grin

Thomcat · 13/06/2006 22:45

Mmmmm could try her with cous cous. What do you do it with.

Sorry Moondog posts crossed.

I do a lot of it the night before and pack it in little plastic containers and then into lunch box with ice-packs.

I presume she has an hour to eat. I also pack quite a bit incase she decides she can't/won't eat one of the things in the lunch bag.

errr...like the others im very impressed at your efforts so far...and only to meet your request for ideas..rather than suggets that there is anything that could be improved upon...breath...

you could make some little fruit kebabs/skewers...melon,pineapple,strawberry grape..etc..obviously youd all have to have em that day!...maybe soem greek yog and honey in sep pot with that?

homemade flapjacks? ...dipped in choc...oh god fruit skewers dipped in choc..inspired!

mini quiches?

errr errrr....cant think...not so good on savoury..have i said mini quiches?

i love cheese and marmite sandwiches

Lact8 · 13/06/2006 22:52

I'm very impressed, how do you find time to go on MN??

I'ma afraid DS1 chooses each day whether he's homes or sandwiches (the school is opposite our house) so if he wants sandwiches, he gets just that plus fruit, drink, raisens, maybe crisps so nothing in his lunchbox is going to inspire you!

(and even that pitifully small lunch comes home half eaten)

Thomcat · 13/06/2006 22:59

fruit kebabs - fab idea.
love flapjack idea too, wicked, dipped in chocolate, mmmmm mummy might have to eat the majority of that.
good idea re quiche again.
top form on the food front BoT. how's everything else?

rains - another one i had forgotten about, thank you.

\link{http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/webpage/lunchboxes2005?view\just remembered this}that someone linked to recently.

beansontoast · 13/06/2006 23:11

of course this is all academic ...my ds lives on last nights dinner!

you could also try ...subject to taste of course ( ds adores it)...4-5 fresh pasta parcels...tonnes of diff kinds in sainsburys, cooked then chilled (see last nights dinner)...with a light dressing or sauce to keep it moist but still finger food....you can have veggie/cheesey/meaty filling depending on how much clout you want it to have.

bearing up ...im doing some full on mnet 'distraction therapy'..if you hadnt noticed!

Thomcat · 13/06/2006 23:16

Thanks for that link. Quite a few thigs I'd forgotten about there that I can do next week.

jellyjelly · 14/06/2006 14:28

How about hummous with bits to dip in or falafel which is fab in a pitta with humous and veg.

yawningmonster · 15/06/2006 04:20

Quite often I will include things like:
Muffins
Corn Fritters
Felafel Patties and sauce to dip into
Baby Tomatoes
Omelette strips
Pita Pockets
Fruit in Jello (HM)

Thomcat · 15/06/2006 10:50

Loving the new ideas, thanks so much. Mad how I couldn't get over that brick wall and was gettign really fed up and feeling bad about it becoming boring for her. Thanks so much for the ideas.

tracyk · 15/06/2006 10:55

do they have a microwave to heat things up? ds favourite is a tortilla wrap with grated cheese inside, folded in half and then 10 secs in mwave makes it nice and soft and mushy!
or bagels and cream cheese or croissants and jam. or rice salad.
