Just closed my Abel and Cole account - how many rotten vegetables can a girl take?

Fellow foodies, am I alone in finding that the quality of Abel and Cole's organic boxes has deteriorated over the past year? I have complained several times and have been given copious apologies and refunds, but I've had enough. I can see that there's a problem with storing root vegetables etc in winter, but don't think that there's an excuse for slimy, smelly spinach in June, or green sausages. DH thinks that they rely on people's goodwill and tolerance of lower standards than they would accept in a shop. I think that may be a bit cynical and that the problem is that they have expanded too quickly.
I hope I'll have more luck with Riverford.

has anyone used the organic delivery company? appear to be based at New covent garden market, deliver in biodiesel van (!), can bring you nice things like organic beer and even a wormery if you fancy one.

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:26

had to complain strongly at one time to give them a kick up the bum after several boxes in a row contained already mouldy veggies. But since then, no problem - are you beginning/end of week delivery by any chance? think they're worse on these days, prob due to storage, as someone said, they've prob expanded too quickly and are now cutting corners.

ooh, organic delivery are wonderful!
I really miss them since moving from London, really , really recommend them over A & C!

bundle · 14/06/2006 11:33

oooh misschief, was pondering over the veg/fruit small box (I think it's £14.95)..what did you get???

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:35

used to get that, sometimes also yummy (but expensive bread). they gave me a case of org wine with my last order as I'd been one of their first customers apparently, can't somehow imagine A * C thinking of that!

foxinsocks · 14/06/2006 11:37

I tried a few - lasted with A&C the longest (liked the flexibility). However, packed them all in when I found we ended up buying a lot of extra stuff from the shops on top of what we were getting already. Tbh, I found that a complete pain so stopped them altogether.

bundle · 14/06/2006 11:38

misschief, i'm not home during the day, do they deliver in the evening? or do they just hide your box somewhere?

treacletart · 14/06/2006 11:39

is there really an A&C shop in Brighton?

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:39

Can't remember - website sd tell you, think neighbour took it in, otherwise yes, cd hide behind hedge or sth.

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:40

bundle · 14/06/2006 11:41

thanks Misschief I think you've persuaded me, they also have tinned tomatoes for 10p on special offer..!

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:44

go for it! How about the wormery too? loads of potential for savings to be made on future rubbish collection! Grin

bundle · 14/06/2006 11:46

we already have a compost bin, i shove our garden worms into that already...

MissChief · 14/06/2006 11:56

oh gosh, you're putting me to shame! really must compost more but dh thinks "it's disgusting" (wtf?) having rotting veg lying around and ds/cats would just try to eat it

Gem13 · 14/06/2006 13:44

Get one of these then

www.wascot.org.uk/html/compost_johanna.asp

Much easier than a wormery and better than a regular composter as it takes meat and dairy (good for left over cereal!).

My council has them on special offer. Do ask to see what yours offers.
